Scripophily

My wife and I spent the day running around to antique stores where I found these vintage stock books. I collect coal company scrip and these are pretty great pieces.
The Hi-Carbon Fuel book starts with certificate no. 1 and only goes to no. 4. they must not have been in business long.

Back in the 30's there were dozens if not hundreds of small coal companies that issued stock certificates in order to raise operating cash. A coal company sometimes was a guy who found a surface coal seam and started digging. Coal Co. scrip are private tokens and paper used in lieu of U.S.currency as salary paid to miners. Who could only spend it at the coal company store. My grandfather was a coal miner in Carbon Co. Pa. and died of silicosis.

Carbon Fuel had mines here in Kanawha Co W Va too. Most coal mines in W Va were owned by out-of-state companies.
I am surprised stock and bond certificates don't have a larger following... This seems to be a terrific and underappreciated area of collecting... There is so much history and design at a cost that seems reasonable for what it is. I buy these when it makes sense
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
I have seen some coal scrips at coin shows in the PNW.... I have not purchased any, but the history is intriguing. I have seen exposed ground coal in one area of WA, near where I lived....Chipped off some pieces, but they are lost now...Cheers, RickO
Very interesting.
A lot of the small Father & Son coal mines were bought out by Gulf and Western in the 1930's because they were getting ready to push the Black Oil for home heating instead of Coal which took over in the 50's. That's what you call planning ahead. and we made the Middle East Rich by doing so. Gold for oil my friends.
I agree. The designs are very detailed. I bought some years ago just for the artwork. Reminds me of early currency.
They also remind me of early currency. Amazing artwork on some. And even beyond that, a lot of history.
I do not own any, but I occasionally peruse the Stock forum on CCF. It is pretty active, and there are a lot of great examples on there. Seems to be a lot of collectors. https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=165
