Old nickels are easy for me to search. The new ones are like dimes, too shiny to read without checking each one up close or with magnification.

I have a bright table lamp and a pocket magnifying glass that has a lens about the size of a quarter. I purchased a cheap digital endoscope with a stand through eBay which is easier to use than a jewelry loop, and I can capture images with it. I think someone can use a 3D printer to make a holder for a cell phone to use the same way?

You can buy an LED lamp with magnifier at your local office supply store.

Probably all you need for the initial search, then a loupe.

    Loupes can be quickly tiresome.

I love nickel roll searching. Ive nearly assembled 5 folders full and the last few Ive made have been by grade. Started an AU one that I have not worked on in a while but then again, I have not done much roll searching lately either.

I noticed that nickels are the one denomination that nice old coins can still be found. I haven’t found silver dimes or quarters in circulation for years but just the other day I found an Uncirculated 1939 Jefferson Nickel.

Too bad you did not get the rolls from a coin dealer that junked his Jeffersons. He pulled out the 50-d, the silver ones, and a couple others, and filled 5 or 6 milk crates with coins, and took them to the bank. Even coins from the 30's, the S mints, etc. were sent out as face value.

I got several quarter rolls & 2 nickel rolls today to search thru for ATB Q's and 2020's, and actually found my first War Nickel in quite a while! 1943-S. Not bad for just 2 rolls!

Good luck and make sure you have a ton of fun and meet some good people just like yourself along the way. Fun is the name of the game😊

    3 boxes X $100 each = $300 worth of nickels
    $300 / $2 a roll = 150 rolls
    150 rolls X 40 nickels per roll = 6,000 nickels

That's a lot of nickels. Sounds like a blast. Good luck. Wash your hands when you are done ;)

    Good luck with your search.

About 1-2 years ago I received in change a 1939 S Jefferson nickel. It is in Fine condition. I retired it and added it to my stash of older Jeffersons.

Over the years I have found multiple 1939 P nickels in change, but not 1939 D or S nickels. Se receiving a 1939 S was a treat.

Cool Jeffy's! Yeah, I too choose to search through rolls of nickels, as well as, Cents. The first thing I look for in the Jefferson is a '64d. I search for the variety 64d/s. Hope you find it. Good luck in other silver, varieties and key years. B)

Hi all, just thought I’d make my first post on the thread that finally got me to join the club so to speak.
Your enthusiasm for these coins have made me rethink what I should do with the “collection” I have amassed.

    Superb pics and good luck!

I am a Jeffie aficionado as well. I love getting a 1940-50 era coin in change . . . have never received anything big, but it IS the one series where a cool coin can still appear!

    Have a fun hunt !!!!!!

That looks like the best one so far. I like the Dirty old ones and the nice war Nickel. Not a popular group due to values but fun to find.

Here my first Clip FredW) confirmed and it was a nickel.

Darn. I had 1950 D was accidently lost or shipped back to the bank. I looked for a while for it. Until my next find hofefully still need a 1950 also. All my Jeffersons are from CRH

    You have done well.
51-S is a great circ find but the 39 DDR is a crazy cool circ find.
That variety (popular but not really rare in an absolute sense) has eluded my 🍒 picking efforts.
