My Latest Auction Strategy

1) Make a fair bid on several coins that I want.
2) Make sure the total amount of all bids added together is slightly more than I am comfortable paying.
3) Pray that I underbid.
Surely this will result in wins, right?

yes, and then you can brag that you were the underbidder on xxx coins
please keep us posted
I hope so - honest.
I tried that. I am not sure what the scuttlebutt is that I have heard about declining coin prices...not seeing it on eBay or auctions...at any of the auction houses. Coins are going for stupid money and o am not talking about best of breed pine tree shillings either
100% positive transactions with SurfinxHI, bigole, 1madman, collectorcoins, proofmorgan, Luke Marshall, silver pop, golden egg, point five zero,coin22lover, alohagary, blaircountycoin,joebb21
My strategy. Have a great relationship with at least one LCS. Bid online accordingly.
Try looking at 64 or 65 Morgans, Saints, Walkers, etc. They have been dropping. I won't even mention commems. If you look at top end coins, they tend to stay up. But ask any dealer and they will tell you how hard it is to sell even $100 coins in the current market.

Good strategy but make sure you have enough pay if win all.
I did that at the 1st Newman auction...
Won 1 and lost 1 (which was then resold on fleaBay two weeks later as a BIN for less than the winning bid at auction)

You have to figure in buyer premium, unless of course your speaking of eBay...

I like the strategy, find a number of coins you like, bid to the lowest amount you think could possibly win, develop a slight uneasiness that you could win all of them, goto sleep, wake up and find out that at least 9 out of 10 times all your bids are beat....once in awhile you may win a coin at a reasonable price........then try to determine how it’s gonna fit in with the rest of your collection
Realone strategy: bid last, bid nuclear.
I used to enjoy sniping on ebay.... got the adrenaline pumping.... Now I don't buy there anymore...other places with not so much hassle or scams. Of course, I am also quite selective in my old age....and I am not working on sets or series anymore....now it is just that 'wow' coin that catches my attention. Cheers, RickO
Not sure commems are all still dropping, I see them dropping in some venues, but I think it's where people are in denial over real current values. I'm thinking we may have reached a real bottom, but I'm not betting the farm either. I keep looking at upgrades and talking myself in and out of pulling the trigger. YMMV
I like classic silver commems. But I’ve heard s people speculate about a “real bottom” for MANY years. Still, even in relatively high grades, they’re quite affordable for many collectors.

Tried that in the Eliasberg sale and got creamed.
Strategy did not work. I did wind up winning a nice 1839 cent at the Goldberg auction on Sunday, but I had to do it using my previous technique of bidding live online. And, of course, overpaying! The coin market looks pretty healthy to me, but maybe its just old copper doing well.
As long as there is electricity in these bids , great moves indeed.
Which reminds me,
Here in New Orleans a sweater with coin motifs I bought was picking up static electricity, so I returned it to the store. They gave me another one free of charge.
Is this like Hansen’s strategy?
