1909 VDB Lincoln Cent that looks like it was struck from a discarded matte proof die

Is it just me or does the reverse of this 1909 vdb Lincoln cent look like the coin was struck using a left over reverse
matte proof die. Lets here it from you matte proof Lincoln collectors!

With the crappy GSC style lighting can't really tell anything. I don't see the die chip by the M or the die scratches near Lincoln's nose.

The dot between the D and B is centered on all 1909 VDB proofs. The dot on this coin is closer to the D. Not a proof die.

    Wonderful analysis

The rims are somewhat square but its missing the markers for a proof die, just a well struck business coin.

NOTE: As you know and others may not...Since Non-Proof 1909 VDB cents exist with a centered dot also, it is not a reliable diagnostic of Proofs. However, it can be used to weed out Non-Proofs as you have done here.

I do not think these dies were ever made for Proofs.

The poster is the one who likes to cherry pick and often picks CG and has even had some luck getting coins in holders.

That said I am sure he thinks he has found one but unlike some other early 20cen proofs where even the TPGs don’t look down to the die pair, everyone does for MPLs do and the VDB is the holygrail so a cleaned shinny well stuck one won’t cut it this time.

That coin is worth a buck

My first impression was not a proof.

Interesting thread.... I learned something here today.... those 'periods' in the initials can be informative... or sometimes not.... ;) Cheers, RickO
