Best MLB Last Names for Scrabble

Back in the day, my brother and I would have Scrabble battles where you could only spell the last names of MLB players.

Zdeb (Joe) and Quirk (Jamie) were good point getters without needing a ton of letters. What names you got?

Rizzuto would rule them all, don't ask Billy Madison to write it in cursive though.

Zobrist on a triple word score and add 50 points for using all 7 letters. That 100 points right there.

Quisenberry isn’t bad but you’d need an extra long letter tray... or I guess you could add Quisen in front of an already played “berry”

To be fair, you'd need to use a blank to spell Rizzuto!

While not exactly high points, at the very end when you are trying to use up your letters, Ott (Ed or Mel) is a good one.

  • Foxx...if no blank, Robidoux (try for a double triple, over 200 points)

Kuntz is outstanding! Fox / Foxx are good ones for sure, and Suzuki would get some great points (he wasn't playing yet in the mid 70's when we had our battles).

Kemp (Steve) came to mind this morning for a solid one with minimal letters.

    Koufax might score ok

Managers count or just players? If managers, then tough to beat Vedie Himsl to refresh the letters.

Current players, Tommy Pham wouldnt score high but would let you ditch some tiles.

I’ll be thinking about this all night now. Damn it.

Emil Yde. His last name is properly pronounced if you say it backwards.

Koufax is 20 points, with no bonus and Kershaw is 17. McCovey is 19.

Dang that is a good one given that he was one of my favorite players as a youngster and never thought of him!

Here he is with another good Scrabble Tiger from the 1976 set:

I do not play Scrabble, but I am curious about how well Carl Yastrzemski would score. It just seems like a name that would score a lot of points.

Yastrzemski has some very high scoring letters (Y, Z, M, K). However, you only have 7 letters to work with plus whatever's already spelled on the board, so several of the more recent names (Rodriguez, Versalles, etc). are, for all intents and purposes, impossible for Scrabble.

Mazzilli, Zdeb, Vuckovich (I think Vuckovich would require some lucky tile placements since you’d need 2 connectors).

Saw all of them come out of a 79 Rack Pack break today.
