Great Experience, Kudos to John Maben at Pegasus Coin & Jewelry

I have a proof 1898 $10 Liberty that was in a detailed NGC holder. I went to Pegasus Coin & Jewelry seeking the opinion of John Maben. Upon reviewing the coin, he indicated that the "damage" mentioned on the label looked like nothing more than what one would expect with light wear as it was really just a minor ding in the field. He thought it could cross the coin into a PCGS holder and not be detailed. John was nice enough to take this to the FUN show for me (his suggestion) and submit this for a crossover option. As it turns out, the crossover was successful and the coin earned a grade of PR55!!! I appreciate John’s opinion, advice, and efforts which resulted in me having a more salable and highly desirable coin in my collection. I believe it has a scarcity rating of 8.7 and there were only 67 minted! I feel lucky to have John and the other staff just a short distance from my home. They have all been friendly and professional every time I have stopped in there.

    Fantastic cross-o @Kindred4u!

    It’s great to see the Au and with the new designation it’ll be much more. Thank you for the showing letting us know how it happened.

    @Kindred4u -
    Is the damage referred to the small ding above the N in TEN on the reverse?

    John has always been a class act. He was the reputation behind MCM. Wish he'd move his shop to JAX.

    As one of the true experts on modern coins, I did not know that Mr. Maben was so prescient on older classy coins like this. That is a big improvement.

    Remarkable coin. Wonderful results!

    Especially curious is crossing a details coin. Logic would suggest cracking and submitting raw. Impressive.

    Lance- Even though this coin was obviously proof I've seen too many situations where service A says it is a proof and service B says it isn't. That was enough reason not to crack it. Logger- I did classic coins from '78 to '96 graded at PCGS in '88, '89 then at NGC from '96 to '04 then started MCM around '05. Sold MCM in '15. Never lost track of my numismatic roots in fact we even maintain a few boxes of raw coins in 2 X 2's in the store and none are modern. Some coins are just better suited for cardboard then for plastic and not because they are no grades just because the value point doesn't warrant the grading fee. At Pegasus our emphasis is on classic coins and bullion we still will do some modern but it is absolutely not the focus.

    Interesting. 1 of my favorite crackouts was an NGC AU Details trade dollar I got into a PCGS Proof 58 Holder!
