1961 Proof Franklin Half Dollar Dipping + Grade + Cameo

Would this coin benefit from a dip? Would the dipping result in better, black, deep mirrors? Would it grade cameo? What would it grade? Thanks.

I would just leave it as is. It is an ultra common date and appears to have some smudging in the obverse field in front of Franklin's face. Who knows how long that smudge from mishandling of the coin has been there. It may have lightly etched the surface by now.

Two years ago I sold a raw 1962 proof set in a Capital Plastics holder that had a cameo half similar to your coin. I tried to get a premium for it but the dealer just pushed it back to me and declined to pay any premium. !962 is also an ultra common date and dealers just don't care about such coins. Beware of hype you may read on these boards. In the end common "stuff" is just common "stuff".

    All glory is fleeting.

Over three million of these proofs were made in 1961.

    Rhetorical questions:

Even if the coin were free, can you justify the grading fee? At what level would the coin have to grade to justify the grading fee?

A good album coin.....Unless it has special significance to you personally, probably not worth slabbing. Cheers, RickO
