Not the most common pet for software executives but this is my hedgehog. I didn't know anything about them but my wife wanted one and this little girl is the best pet.
She's a year old now and the quills only hurt if she's mad, otherwise she's soft and sweet.

I was raking out a flower bed last spring and every time I stepped forward I heard a loud SQEEEK!
I finally figured out it was a rabbit nest with four little ones inside. We babied it when we probably shouldn't have, contstructing a roof over it for when it rained. But, the mother would appear on a regular basis to feed them, and they all survived until they went off into the world one day.

LOL for me. Your exact same scenario caused me to unfortunately have an ex wife. Dem damn horses were more important than the kids and me. She went after my coin collection when we were divorcing and Dem Damn horses saved it! If you wanna sell my coins then we are selling the horses I PAID FOR!
Edit to add: I spent just as much on Den Damn horses as I did my coins...if not more.
Don't particularly like dogs, and my wife's allergic to cats. So once the boys moved out of the house, I got me a pair of GERBILS!! Great for relieving stress, and they have me pretty well trained already! LOL!
Not really pets, but you can train wild anoles to eat from your hand, even to the point of jumping over the water in the swimming pool, once they trust you:

I used to have one of these-a common Corn Snake.
And one of these-an Albino Striped California King Snake.
Had one of these 40 years ago before the insurance company made them popular.
