"Newbie" to forum saying Hello!!!

I finally joined the forum after "lurking" here for quite a long time. I am a "Newbie" to collecting as well. I never even thought to check and see if my pocket change could possibly be more than just that; that is until I came in contact with a coin that has baffled me as long as I have owned it. For almost an entire year of countless/endless hours searching the internet researching and lurking, I still have not came across anything even close to it to try and compare. I sincerely apologise to all of you now for my lack of knowledge in it's entirety. One thing I have definitely found is that this specific forum is full of people who have excellent knowledge and you all know your stuff so I joined knowing I was in the best place for 100% honest help. I need it lol. I will post the coin that has turned me into an insomniac, with pics and info I have obtained about it very soon. Trust me, I am very anxious to know what I'm dealing with. I have many other coins I have collected since then that I will be asking about as well. One in which I am getting ready to post. But do I post it here just as I did this message? Anyway, sorry to talk so much, I just wanted to say hello to everyone and also..... HELP 🤪

Welcome to the Forum. You're well on your way, look, you already have a star! So you've come to the right place for info, and a good schooling. Take a pic of your coin, front and back...or as we say around here, obverse and reverse, and post it here. Good luck.

    Welcome to the forum @Rfox515.

You can copy/paste, drag drop, or insert using the drop down menu above a post to the far right that looks like a small picture. Of course, it may vary what can be used depending on your browser, app, device, computer, etc.

Also getting a couple resources will help you in this hobby.

And when/if you narrow your focus on what to collect get the appropriate resource.

    Enjoy the search/hobby!

Edit: Lots of resources can be found here: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1006619/resources-books-to-read-on-numismatic-series-and-varieties

Yes, just post here in a reply to your thread. Drag and drop a picture into the edit box from your computer or use the image icon to attach an image from somewhere on your phone.

    We're glad you're here.
Coins and their history are quite fascinating and you will never run out of things to learn.

  • Here it is.....
Here are some pics of my quarter in question. Im baffled. It is a 2008 Alaska state quarter. It weighs 5.67 grams. It is approx .23 mm smaller than regular quarters and approx .26 mm wider. There is absolutely no detail in the bear/wilderness picture like there is in the original design. Almost like it is just a sketch. Im at a loss. Tell me what your opinions are PLEASE. The first picture is a photo of an original quarter of that year for comparison.

@Rfox515....Welcome aboard....Your quarter appears to have been worked on by what we used to call 'spooning'...where the edge of the coin was repeatedly tapped by the curved inside of a spoon...this was done with the intent of making a ring - eventually drilling out the center. Saw it done often while I was in the Navy...Yours appears to have only been begun and then abandoned... as far as the lack of detail on the reverse, that also appears to be PMD, though I am not sure what was employed to impart the effect. Sorry, no added numismatic value to your coin. Cheers, RickO

Looks like the quarter has been messed with after being struck. One term used is "spooned," which refers to tapping the edge of a coin with the back of a spoon, making it smoother and wider. Something a little heftier than a spoon could be used as well. The bear seems to have been planed off, although there is the possibility that it was struck that way with a filled die. Planing off the bear and spooning the edge to eliminate the reeding would be two things you'd have to do to make the coin look like a die setup strike, which can be valuable. Unfortunately, it looks like all you have is worth 25c, and only with a live cashier.

Might want to start a new thread with question instead of posting into your “hello” thread. Many don’t come back to a thread they’ve previously posted into.

My opinion is that it was pressed into an encasement that was used as a keychain or belt buckle etc.. That would explain the smaller OD, flat rims and extreme one-sided wear.
