Question: Why is the United States Mint releasing 2020-W 5-cent coins in 2020 annual sets?

Answer: How about the 2019 “W” cents bonuses brought in an additional +$7 million…

Sales numbers for the Sold Out 2018 annual sets:

18RG 2018 Proof Set 517,081 @ $27.95
18RF 2018 Silver Proof Set 332,274 @ $49.95
18RJ 2018 Uncirculated Set 257,536 @ $21.95
Total sales $ for the three 2018 Annual Sets = $36,702,415.45

Sales numbers through January 12, 2020 for 2019 annual sets:

19RG 2019 Proof Set (with “W” proof cent) 561,495 @ $27.95
19RF 2019 Silver Proof Set (with “W” reverse proof cent) 383,500 @ $54.95
19RJ 2019 Uncirculated Set (with “W” uncirculated cent) 318,695 @ $21.95
Total sales $ through January 12, 2020 for the three 2019 Annual Sets = $43,762,465.50

…SO…That’s +$7 million in sales for the three annual sets with the “W” cent bonuses and 2019s are still available.

This is in context where Y/Y sales continuing to drop for virtually all Mint offerings.

It has already been announced the 2020 Proof Set will Increase in price from $27.95 to $32.00 and I anticipate that both the 2020 Silver Proof Set and the 2020 Uncirculated Set will have price Increases…

Since FY2011 these three sets combined have Lost $85.2 Million...

Don't they technically lose money on every cent and nickel at this point? Only made up for by the seignorage of the higher denominations? Of course, if it was up to me (and not being able to influence inflation), I'd drop the cent and nickel and reinstitute the half and dollar and add $2, $5, and $10 coins and eliminate the paper.

On the circulating side of the United States Mint, they do indeed lose money on every cent and nickel.
14 fiscal years consecutively for losing money...
