Hello, was needing the opinions of some coin collectors on this possible 1943 Copper Penny. The penny was tested at a coin shop and it is copper. Owner could not give me a for sure answer on it's authenticity. I put the coin on ebay auction hoping to get some responses from coin collectors. The coin got bid up to $1,000 very quick. Ebay removed the listing and told me I could only relist it if it had been certified. So, should I spend the money or not? Help Please?

There’s a reason why it’s scratched up...
You are going to be rich!
That coin isn't graded .... I wonder why?
Save your money.
It's a counterfeit - if it's on a copper
planchet it means nothing. They
are easy to find, and overstrike with
fake/false dies.

Sure looks like an altered date to me. Sorry.

I wonder who first presented this item as the real McCoy? Thus beginning another urban legend. The parking lot damage is goofy. IMO. Peace Roy

Hi and Welcome to school. I say school because you'll be taught in many areas. Such as, in ethics, manners and in business. You most certainly came to the right place for any answers in coins. Ask any questions and post often. Don't be a stranger here. Remember the most important thing, have FUN! Already you've been taught a valuable hard lesson. By telling your own story you posted on your very first thread, not only you learned something but us collectors too have learned something. This is why I stated that this Forum is similar to going to school. Lessons learned everyday.
Boy'o boy! Talk about a let down. Please don't be discouraged. I can't imagine coming across something like this during roll searching? I feel for you. To think, from knowing you just hunted down one of the most sought after coins in the hobby, then later to find out the terrible reality news. From that numismatic high to that numismatic low. Unfortunately, in this great hobby, this is the hoops we must sometimes go through and face. Oh well, better luck next time. In the above posts, you've been given the best advice from members that have an abundant amount of knowledge in the game. Esp. the gentleman that posted his answer stating about a copper planchet and about false dies (Fred Weinberg). He's an expert in that area of error coins. Once again, welcome to the Forum. Thanks for sharing your almost treasure.-joey

It looks like a modern fake that can be purchased online for a dollar or thereabouts.

I agree -- altered date coins typically have a short lower curve on the 3.
Fake. Roughed up to try making it look old and authentic.
Think about it, what numeral was changed and from what? The date is NOT altered.
That line just cracks me up because it's so true. And looking closer, Abe has a little smile on his face! He's grinning.
Bottom of the 3 looks like it’s about to swing off
Agree it's not an altered date. There are fake 1943 copper cents where a genuine 1948 cent has the 8 tooled to be a 3.

It's fairly easy to make counterfeit dies since genuine 1943 cents are made of steel which can be hardened to create a steel hub that can be used to create false dies. This coin looks like a struck counterfeit made using false dies.

Um...no.

What are the odds the OP will ever post again?

About the same as the odds of this coin being genuine.

Or pop up under a new name with some other CF...

Actually the odds of this happening are fairly likely.
