Pre-FUN Newps

At FUN I picked up 5 S-mint barber quarters that I purchased pre-FUN off the web, all CAC, VF25-35. The dealer was very nice to bring them and give them to me there rather than mail them. I just imaged them today, and in honor of the Niners making the NFC Championship game for the first time in many Moons, here they are. Post some S-mint coins for the Niners, or heck even for the Packers as well since no mint nearby.

Four of them are relatively common but very hard to find unscrubbed in these grades, which is why they CACed. One is the 1897-S, still not hard to find but one of the less common dates in the series. I just love the look of a Barber Quarter in VF-XF grades when they still have surfaces not intentionally enhanced.

Best, SH

That's the perfect look for circ. barbers IMO. I peck away at a set the halves from time to time.

Very choice examples for the grade!

I would take issue that the 97S is not hard to find in that grade range though.
I seldom came across any higher than VG while scouring shows some years back.
Perhaps more have come out of the woodwork?

I recall getting first shot at the coins in an upper/mid-grade set at a Summer FUN show, from which I picked out quite a few coins (as the dealer was pricing them at 'sheet'). Most were pretty nice, but the 97S was XF+ details, and scrubbed to death. Even at a deep discount I didn't want it.
