The coin that almost didn't make it....

crazyhounddogcrazyhounddog Posts: 13,986 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was unable to make it to the FUN show this year. But that wasn't going to stop me from having some fun with picking up some pretty coins, if I could find them out. I stumbled across this, what I found to be, a gorgeous 1911 Eagle graded by pcgs. After going back and forth a bit the good seller and I decided on a price that worked for us both. I purchased this piece and just could not wait to see it in hand.
Now for the rest of the story.
I am anxiously waiting for this coin to be delivered so to see it in hand and then the day arrives. The tracking # shows it's out for delivery and the excitement builds. Then the mailman comes and goes with no coin delivered. So I check it against the USPS tracking and it shows the same....Out for delivery and then zip. So I check with the seller, @Senator32, a member right here from this forum if he could shed any light on this problem. He says he sent it with signature required. This made me feel better but where was this coin that seemed to vaporize like a fart in the wind. I was also missing some silver bullion that was supposed to be delivered that same day. Well, all the other mail was delivered but no coin and no bullion. Long story short I find this beautiful gold Eagle on my porch, unopened, with a note that read..... This was put into our mailbox by accident. I have no idea which of my, very honest, neighbors did this but I sure would like to thank them. It was sent with signature required so it makes me wonder how any mail person could make a mistake like that? The bullion was delivered a day later. The tracking for this coin shows it's STILL out for delivery. This could have ended really bad.

All told I'm very happy to say...…. Here is my new addition to my collection. Thanks a bunch for the deal on this beautiful, lustrous Eagle, Larry.
Thanks for looking, Joe

Nice coin it a 63 or 64? Had a neighbor do the same for me several years ago and it was a signature required too.
Come to find out it was a sub for the day as the usual delivery man was out with the flu,
alone with about half the postal staff at the time.

I discovered he also was a sub that day/night. I saw him at 8:30 PM, driving around in circles. Scary isn't it??

The scary thing is even if you think you are covered by buying insurance through usps...good luck trying to collect it if they lose your coin. Should be illegal for them to allow you to ensure it for whatever you want but then require proof it was worth that if they lose it...I gotta an idea...either don’t take my money for insurance or deliver the darn coin.

Not scary at all. Par for the course in the USPS in today's world.

Funny you saw him so late, but you NEVER see anyone from USPS at the crack of dawn.

Glad you got that wonderful gold!

That has happened to me and it was a substitute carrier. Still... why no signature?

Funny you saw him so late, but you NEVER see anyone from USPS at the crack of dawn.

I do, they are in the parking lot loading their trucks up with the day's delivery. :) I always try to stay on good terms with my carriers. just this week I was out squirrel hunting and stopped in at the gas station afterwards, saw my sub-carrier there on a different route and talked for a few minutes. USPS carriers get a bad rap but it's a tough job. one thing I know for sure --- there must be trick to it because the subs always run late, the regular guy is like a clock.

to CHD, are you back in Paradise where you were burned out?? if so, it doesn't surprise me what your neighbor did and it speaks well to the character of everyone who made it through that tragedy. things like that tend to unite people.

It's graded 64 by PCGS. I have 2 other Saint Eagles at 64 and this one has them beat. These pics aren't hiding anything. What they do tend to do is amplify any blemishes it has. What you see on the Indians chin is barely noticeable in hand. I love this Sigma 180MM lens too.

I’ve had the same thing happen two times, but nothing with a coin of that magnitude. That’s a beauty!

We have 3 carriers that deliver to us, the old reliable delivers our house early, I think the other 2 run the route backwards so it's almost 5:00.

    She's beautiful, Congrats!

Just today I received a package that was sitting at my garage that contained a silver eagle set in Dansco album. Clearly said signature required right on the label. At least it arrived at the correct address but a bit disconcerting that it was sitting outside my garage with no signature received.

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

I sold a coin with signature required. It was left in the buyers mailbox without signature. Fortunately it was received without issue. I went back to the post office and after 20 minutes of waiting as they checked their systems I received a refund of $2 or so for their failure to get a signature, complete waste of time and not worth the refund, but it was a matter of principle.

I'm sure it's fairly graded then, kind of what I thought about the picture. Nice pick up, enjoy!

Heads up on usps. No carrier sub or regular is to deliver a signature confirmation without a customers signature. Scanner alerts them that sig is needed and stops all activity. Obviously carrier is signing which is a firing offense. Anybody that has this issue needs to go to the po and make a big stink. No way would po replace this coin. Doubt neighbor signed as he isn't expecting a it and would have noticed wrong address. Most carriers are hard working but no excuse for not doing their job.
