My Winter 2020 FUN report
I've seen the other reports posted and it appears good times were had be all. So I'll add to the pile of show reports with my own, since everyone's experiences are always a bit different. My attendance at the show was pretty much all of Thursday and quite a bit of Friday, so those are the days I'll cover.
I did come to this show with an agenda, to work on a trade deal with HLRC to acquire an 1815/2 Capped Bust half that I saw on their website. Anything else from the show would just be the bacon bits on the fully loaded baked potato.
I was there in time for the ribbon cutting on Thursday, and there was a good crowd there waiting for that and the opening of the coin gates. Even Ben Franklin got interviewed and didn't look a day over 200! The crowd was pretty steady throughout on Thursday, though it thinned out a bit later in the day.
Once into the show, I made a quick couple of passes before heading to the HLRC (Harry Laibstain Rare Coins) table to work on the deal. I have dealt with Harry in the past and have always enjoyed the transactions. I had about 20 coins for potential trade and Harry took his time and eventually accepted all of them, and came up with a total price within the range I was expecting, which was awesome. The end result was the addition of this beautiful PCGS AU-50 1815/2 to my Capped Bust half collection. The colors are very nice and the luster really swirls thru.
This pretty much made my whole show, but I knew there was lots more to look at! Part of the reason I was trading was to help narrow my focus to my core sets, sometimes you realize you just might have too many coins that you might not miss if they got sold. As for the prices, some of the coins I did come out ahead, and some I took a hit but it pretty much balanced out. With this hobby, you will always have something to show for it. Try that with a Beanie baby!
I did spend some time at Sheridan Downey's table to drool over a couple coins in his auction, especially that toned 18210/19.
Next on my list was the 1824 over various dates Capped Bust half. Even though this variety isn't supposed to be rare, I've had a tough time locating a good one until I ran into Liz Coggan (@Coggan), formerly of JJ Teaparty. She had a nice selection of stuff at her table, including this screaming luster AU-53 1824 over various dates! Didn't take too long to add this one.
I did wander several more aisles and checked out other dealers, but the buzz of the 1815 proved difficult to shake off. I didn't get any more coins on Thursday, showing that I could resist buying more outlier coins. Oh, and I also joined the Liberty Seated Collector's Club. Always been meaning to join, and it was actually my wife that got me over to their table to join up. All the guys at that table were super nice, and seeing how they treated a non-collector, it really was a no-brainer to sign up for a couple of years.
The next day (Friday) was mostly a day to look for more possible coins, and to sell some additional ones to folks I've chatted with on Instagram. This was also the day for the PCGS Luncheon, which has really picked up in popularity, way more people were signed up for this year than last year - I think a bigger room is in order! Kudos to @BrettPCGS, @HeatherBoyd and especially @SethChandler for the inspiring story about getting in the coin business. Sample slabs you ask? Well, they didn't disappoint. Not only did they hand out a Everglades quarter, they also introduced their currency grading in one as well!
The rest of Friday was spent looking thru more cases, more exhibits, doing some selling and running into various forum/Instagram members, either at the luncheon or on the floor - @DIMEMAN, @lkeigwin, @dlp, @drddm, @blu62vette and others I can't think of at this time. I also picked up a nice raw 1856 3 cent piece for the bookshelf album. Due to things coming up I couldn't make the evening get-together at the Rosen, but it looks like a good time was had. Props to @StacksBowersGalleries for picking up the tab too, very classy and nice move!
On the way back home on a connecting delayed flight to Dallas, I ran into @ThePennyLady, she said she had a great show! Her table was busy every time I went by.
Overall I had a great show, and the buzz and attendance seemed really good. It did give me a good vibe for the state of the hobby in 2020. It seemed like nice, attractive coins were selling, but the cleaned, scrubbed "dreck" was sitting idle. I did run into a couple of "preppers" during the show and veered as far away as I could. Life's too short that nonsense. Me and my wife also checked out the Star Wars section of Disney the day before and had a blast.
See you at Winter FUN 2021!

Wonderful coins, Erik! The 1815/2 is always in demand and expensive, and not always eye appealing. But yours is, and worth what you paid.
The '24 everydate (LOL) looks terrific. The "over-various" halves are often quite nice.
Great seeing you again. Congrats on your newp's!
Lance.
Not sure what you traded but the 1815/2 is awesome!

If you have fun and can bring home at least one nice coin, it was a successful show. Sounds like it was!
It was great seeing and chatting with you again, Erik!
Your 15/2 is beautiful. As Lance mentioned above, this overdate for some reason is tough to find with nice eye appeal, however yours has tons!
Congrats on picking it up, and for getting that very nice 1824 OVD as well, great job!

Thanks for the report and congrats on ur very nice coins? By the way, what is a "prepper"?
This is a person who is endlessly obsessed with preparing for the end of days. Some are loaded up with non-perishables, bullion and ammo, thinking that one day that only gold and silver will matter. To them, the paper dollar sucks, the stock market is bogus and the government is always out to get you. I've been around enough of them to pick up the patterns, but I tend to work my away away from such people. They are just not worth my time.

Nice to meet you Elmerfusterpuck!
Thanks Eric. I knew about doomsday preppers, just did not understand how they are coin related. I would assume they are love with bullion.
A very nice 1815/2!
