Spacehayduke FUN Show Report.2 with images
Hello Folks,
Here is my FUN show wrap-up. Both collectors and dealers are reporting that it was a great show. I can agree it was non-stop action. There are many things going on that I did not have time to write down in my first report. Here I will show the images of coins I obtained and provide some additional commentary.
I ended up selling all but one of the 7 coins/tokens I brought for sale - some to dealers some to collectors. To dealers, 2 of them went for trade as part of a deal for a purchase, and 3 for sale outright. The best coin I brought went to a collector that recognized how special it was. Always happy when a coin goes into a great collection. I also brought one token, a rare and one of the best 3 known, for Bill Jones. I was not looking to sell it, but I had enjoyed it for a decade and I knew Bill was looking for one of this quality. It is now Bill's and I think he will do a write up on it soon..
Great Collections displayed some upcoming auction highlights. You definitely want to check out their auctions coming up, some great coins you will see. I brought one for consignment and dropped it off on my way out on Saturday. Todd (Blu62vette) had a table next to GC. GC accepts Todd's images for their listings, so I paid the massive sum of $10 and Todd did the images and handed the coin over to GC for me. This $10 is going to pay off in the auction no doubt.
Spent a good hour on Saturday at the table of Sovereign Rarities from the UK. They had an amazing inventory of British coins from centuries ago up to the present. Many of their gold pieces were finest known where only a few exist - of course these were priced way above what I can pay, but they were still happy to show me the coins and discuss their history. The owners used to own the auction house Baldwin's, a highly reputed UK auctioneer. They sold it, said they got antsy sitting at home and started Sovereign Rarities. I noted to them I enjoyed the Numistacker videos from the UK. They said 'Numi was here filming on Thursday'. Sure enough the videos are posted. Check out Numi especially if you like sovereigns and all gold.
On to the images of the newps from the show.
This is a coin I got in a recent GC auction that Ian nicely delivered at the show for me to pick up. You can see it is rare, ≤60 known, a repunched date that is very attractive. I have been looking for one for 5 years and this one came up on GC. Amazingly, there are 20 or so known in grades of XF to MS63, but they just don't trade, they must be locked up in great collections. Happy this one came up and I won it. I showed a dealer friend, he did not like it and did not think it would CAC. I agree but with these rare bust quarter die marriages, sometimes you take what you can find, and I do very much like this one:
Here is the first of 2 bust quarters I got from Dave Perkins. Low grade, but a die marriage I did not have and very colorful:
Here is the 2nd from Perkins. David said it was in a manilla envelope in Europe for decades and it certainly has a nice thick patina, You would think this is the type of coin CAC would love. We will see when I send it in. I already have a nice 45 in this die marriage, but I could not resist and will be an upgrade to my Everyman registry set. Nice hints of aquamarine tone on the peripheries in spots. Several die clashes. The lumps you see everywhere are from the result if the dies being heavily rusted, which I love:
Finally, here is a new bust dollar that immediately caught my eye. Old Green Holder, great color, the nice circulated cameo appearance. Exactly what I love in an old bust coin. Dave knew what he was selling and I had to stretch for it, but happily did. I need to reshoot it after I polish off the noticeable marks on the slab but here is a preliminary image:
In summary a great show for buying, selling, meeting folks, and being immersed in numismatics.
Best, SH

Great report and great pick-ups!!
I've always wanted to attend this show, but being in Canada, it's a long journey and not the best time either for me, but who knows....someday.
Also, I've learned that with each year, the quality of Canadian material has lessened.

Seems the real lesson here is that some coins are truly rare in terms of surviving population. There are those that accept this and know perfection is improbable. So the challenge is to find something that likely will be as good as it gets or as good as we can afford... And then there are those with expectations. And those expectations may never be satisfied.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
