Aaannnd... It'll be a W-Nickel year...

BackroadJunkieBackroadJunkie Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭✭✭

Last year the freebie premium in the annual sets was a W-Cent, this year will be a W-Nickel. Coinworld reports:

Mint to issue 2020-W Jefferson 5-cent coins as annual set premiums

Three 2020 annual sets sold by the U.S. Mint — the Proof set, Silver Proof set and Uncirculated Coin set — will be accompanied by a 2020-W Jefferson 5-cent coin with one of three different finishes.

Same as last year, an uncirc W-nickel in the mint set, a proof W-Nickel in the proof set and a reverse proof W-Nickel in the Silver set.

Will we see another W-dime next year?

Well, this should continue to boost annual set sales...

This will complete the West Point Mint’s coinage for anyone who is collecting them all.

After this, to be unique, they will need to be made in another finish that any of them have not already been made in.

Previous issued by West Point Mint with a visible West Point mintmark:
    1¢, 2019, Unc, PR, RPR
5¢, 2020, Unc, PR, RPR (TBD)
    10¢, 1996, Unc
    25¢, 2019, Circ
50¢ (Kennedy), 2014, Ag RPR, Au PR
    $1 (ASE) 1995, PR
    $1 (Sacagawea) 2015, EUnc

    Next? Clad Kennedy’s?

    Edit: Added 1995-W ASE

We need to design a mobile mint that can be moved from one city to the next and have millions of different mintmarks released for various celebrations. Large coin shows = a special mint mark, Superbowl = a special mint mark, epicenter of earthquake = a special mint mark. The possiblities are limitless!

Not something I am chasing, but it seems like a good idea to keep folks interested in the annual sets, so I am all for it.

I think that Whitman needs to start leaving random blank holes in albums for the surprise coins that the Mint tosses out there.

Will be the extra this year for the registry (like the 2017-S a few years ago). Don't consider it as needed in my Dansco albums, so not worried there is no space for them. (Like the S Mint business strike quarters they are doing have no place in my Dansco albums).

Look forward to it, will probably need to buy a mint set this year.

From the article "The release of the 2020-S Proof set will coincide with the Feb. 27 to 29 American Numismatic Association National Money Show in Atlanta. The Mint will offer the sets at its booth at the show."

Let the special holder begin. Wonder if the other's will be released during shows? (Like the 2017 special set happened during the ANA)

This is good info, Hemi. Nice to have it all in one place.

Will this get/keep people interested in the annual sets, or just make people not care about a W mintmark?

I am very happy that many of you are looking forward to these nickels.

I have absolutely no interest in these. Especially, since you have to buy one of the U.S. Mints expensive, burdensome, space wasting mint or proof sets to obtain one.
