Peculiar question on raw $10 Libs I am selling on Craigslist

s4nys4ny Posts: 1,569 ✭✭✭

I posted a group of six raw $10 Libs for sale on Craigslist yesterday. One person asked if I was the original owner.
The most recent date is 1900.

Possible...he said original owner, but actual owner may be what he meant. When I was 18 and applying to college, my 65 year old priest wrote a letter "he is a nice boy, I have known him all my life."

Wow! Craigslist? Who in their right mind would buy any coin there, let alone a RAW $10 Lib.

Successful Transactions: Coinflip, bp777, firstspousecoins, Akbeez, jmlanzaf, JWP

The safe response would be I've owned them since XXXX.

    You lost me at craigslist.
Considering the platform, that question would not surprise me.

Be careful. Lots of robberies. Do it at A police station parking lot.

Why not try to sell them here?

They are likely to sell at melt, so I prefer an immediate transaction. I have sold coins on Craigs before and I always meet at the buyer's bank.

It is immediate, but there is still the problem of shipping, lost by Post Office, insurance, possible returns, etc. I read all the horror stories. When gold was higher a few years ago, I sold 10 PCGS/NGC MS 62 Saints for $18,000. I met at the buyer's bank, he got a cashiers check from his account, I deposited the same check in my account.

Around the same time, I sold all my "details" "genuine" etc coins to a jewelry store at melt. Got cash, parked right in front of store.

I used Craig's list one time.

The deal went off in a back parking lot with no one else in sight.

I handed the guy multiple thousands of dollars in cash.

    I drove off in a bitchin Toyota 4x4 :)

If one does a $18,000 withdrawal and the money is deposited into another account without either party having touched the bills would that have to be reported on a Form 8300?

Using a cashier's check negates any reporting since the amount was over $10K.

I can't imagine ANY Toyota being "bitchin."

Any Toyota 4x4 is the vehicle to get if you are into off-roading.

Correct, there was no cash. I wanted to see the buyer get the check from the bank. So many are fake now. He got the check payable to himself. Endorsed it and I deposited it to my account. He never knew my name.

A cashier's check is consider cash for Form 8300 reporting purposes only if it is less than $10K as any amount above that and any due diligence is the responsibility of the issuer.
