More Gimmicks from the United States Mint for 2020...

cagcrispcagcrisp Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭✭✭

“Three 2020 annual sets sold by the U.S. Mint — the Proof set, Silver Proof set and Uncirculated Coin set — will be accompanied by a 2020-W Jefferson 5-cent coin with one of three different finishes.”

  1. 2020 sales will Not exceed sales for the three sets in 2019. More people like Lincoln vs. Jefferson.
  2. Prices for the 2020 Proof Set was Increased by 14.5%. You have to assume the other two offerings will Increase also.
  3. You can only go to the well so many times with Gimmicks...

It's only a matter of time before they start with The "Dancing With The Stars" or "The Bachelor" commemorative coins

    My exact thinking also.

In reading this, I was thinking about the matte finish Jefferson Nickel from 1997. However, the mintage was 25,000 and it was a novelty at the time.

I figure four more times after 2020: W mint-marked dimes, quarters halfs and dollar coins. :s

Dime-1996, quarters-2019 (and the cent) halfs-2014-Kennedy and dollars-2015-Sac have been done before. But they can still do these in all the different finishes. :o

All that’s left is the nickel.

With first strike cacs commemorative pokemon beanie baby labels. I fear we have officially entered the collectors bubble phase of the cycle.

So is it a random choice from the mint on which you’d get with a set?

Edit: read the full article. Makes sense now. Also nice that they may be fixing the packaging issues of the special coin. My Lincoln’s last year were floating around. Thankfully they didn’t look worse for the experience.

It’s similar to what was done with the cents last year.

    Unc set : unc nickel

    Proof set : proof nickel

Silver set : reverse proof nickel

One that won't ultimately work either. Recent sales should look good compared to years from now.

I quit buying coins from the Canadian mint when it became necessary to buy multiple sets of coins that I mostly didn't want just to get the few I did. I quit buying from the US mint before they decided to go down this path, with the expectation that it was just a matter of time.

I like this. Would be nice if they had a circulating variety, too.
