Stopped at the bank...

And asked for half dollar. The teller had $5.50 including these. They are my first silver halves from the bank and I love the toning.
I got 3 90% and a 40%. I paid $2 for $22 of silver. Today was a good day.

Congrats. Don't you love it when the public is blind to this? ;) This is the case when you don't have to be a cherry picker to be a cherry picker.

I always ask myself the same question:
How can a person work in a bank but not have the slightest knowledge about money? :s
    Nice score!

Perhaps they’re just doing their job, which doesn’t usually entail checking change.😉

My suspicion is that these days more silver halfs are found in teller's trays than boxes of half dollars.

I have gone by one of my banks that only had $4 in halves in the whole bank, and all were 40%.

A while ago I visited a bank. They had 1 half dollar. Held it up.... to my surprise it was a 1964! :)

I used to go to the bank for halves on a regular basis.... Never found a lot of silver... some, but not a lot. Stopped for a long while now....should do it again. Cheers, RickO

I've gotten 90% at banks before, but it's been several years since.

  • Eric_BabulaEric_Babula Posts: 413 ✭✭✭✭

I had a similar experience not long ago. No 90%, but fun anyway!

Nice score - congrats! Be nice to them - maybe they'll remember you and set aside some more!

Unfortunately, the woman who saved these for me no longer works at my bank. Or, at least I never see her anymore - maybe her hours have changed. Not sure. Now, the ones I do see are not very personable. They just want to handle my transaction and move me out - don't even want to chat. Oh well....

last week I stopped by the bank to get some quarters. Some of the branches won't give out CWRs (Customer Wrapped Rolls), but this one actually likes to dump CWRs on private customers so they can save the shotgun rolls for the business customers.

When I got home with my five rolls of quarters I went through them and found four silver quarters.

The funny thing was, the rest of the coins were a normal mix. It wasn't like someone broke open a jar that had been sitting around for 40 years.

Sometimes the CWRs are the best ones.

My guess would be there are some pretty strict rules about tellers taking/making change for themselves out of their own till.
