Is that 8 doubled on the right?

I'll guess proof (wire rim, flat fields, sharp strike) 64RB, but I do not like the eye appeal.

I respectfully disagree with our host's assessment that the first coin is a circulating example.

So did the well known Aussie seller and ANACS. I am not happy with PCGS.

There are photos of nine 1958 Melbourne proofs in the following three links. About half of them show exactly the same machine doubling on the 8 and the word PENNY as does your coin..

I wouldn't know a "proof" from a "spoof" and the only specimens that I know about, I leave at the doctor's office/lab ... however you can take bosox's opinion to the bank, as he is Mr Proof or Mr. Spec. Even Rob's fingers sparkle when he's handling his coins.

For those who didn't look up the coin, PCGS graded it

    Send it back for review.

Irrespective of the MS or PR designation, I think 64 is generous (on the 1958 coin).

ANACS also graded it PF64RB. I think the grade is accurate. I like the toning/eye appeal. But I can see how some might not like it.

You shouldn’t have cracked it from the Anacs holder if it was a certified proof. Cross grading only, even possible downgrading if you absolutely insist on one company, but never crack them first.

I sold an expensive proof 1873 coin to a collector. The coin was clearly under graded , at SP63, an area where NGC grades certain very rare coins as PR and PCGS as SP but with no difference in the market value. So ,he cracks it out and sends it to NGC. BTW, the coin was initially in an old fattie NGC Specimen 63 holder, before it became mine. Imagine his surprise when the low-mid 5 figure coin he had just bought returned as NGC MS63, when he was expecting a PR64-64+.

And nothing could help him by then: not even my old TrueView of the coin stating it’s old PCGS grade, once it’s out of the holder, it’s the Wild West.

I like the 1962 the best.

this was happening to some people in the sports talk forum about a month ago. it cleared up after a while , I wasn't affected by it at that time.

    Could be a browser issue

  • ajaanajaan Posts: 17,075 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well the coin in question was sent back to PCGS with Rob's notes about it. PCGS still called it MS. They just screwed me out of $200.
