Don't believe there is just one reason for market changes. economy, supply and demand, political turmoil etc. if we knew, we could make some quick money, ya think ?

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Sometimes we can associate the move with geopolitical activities, sometimes economic issues....Then there are times that it is being manipulated... as to the reason for the last...purely greed. Cheers, RickO

Ultimately the dilution of the US and world currencies are the pivotal factor. That of course does not explain day to day or even year to year volatility. Platinum for example is at half the peak of a decade ago.

Yeah, isn't that a shame? Imagine all the investors in that Precious Metal. Sh-h-h-hish

The ultimate reason for the question posed by the OP is psychological. People act on what they believe, whether it is "real" or not.

Well of course there is no shame to any market move. Buying plat at $2000 was an illiogical move if one took a look at pricing history. But a decade later, the deep discount of plat to gold makes one wonder which is the better 9or worse) place to be.

Geopolitical instability. Gold has historically been considered safe as in if all else goes to hell I can always trade gold and silver to survive. Physical possession of gold is a mental safety blanket.

Gold is a true measure of inflation. Against it we can more easily see how expensive or not things are down through the ages.

Lots of reasons, but one is the ability of economically emerging nations/populations to be able to afford precious metals in all forms, and also the expansion of industrial uses for silver and gold.

One small example: Silver was the up and coming industrial metal, sure to explode in value due to its use in photography (film and prints) ) and xrays, etc., until those technologies as we knew them virtually disappeared.

Election uncertainty likely to drive up precious metals later this year. The potential for big political change makes financial markets unhappy and drives some to precious metals.

The original question was to explain frequent fluctuations, especially sudden drastic changes, as opposed to long term trends. In my opinion, many sudden changes are due to the purchase or the sale of large amounts of bullion, by unidentified entities, perhaps financial conglomerates, large corporations, major speculators or central banks. Such entities can make a great immediate impact because the bullion markets have relatively low stockpiles in liquid form. If for example Warren Buffet decides to suddenly buy or sell a few billion of any bullion commodity, there will be a substantial quick jump up or down.

The reason for the fluctuation in the price of PMs is because of the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD, the rise of Hip-Hop as a musical genre, Roger's disappearance from the Boards, the the fact that the Redskins irretrievably suck.

My gold eagle was selling of Liberty coin for $758 when I bought it but now it is selling for $910 and melt value has risen for my coin from $650 when I bought it to around $761, more that what I spent on it !

Gold is on the rise !!!

I believe gold prices fluctuate because when less gold is dug up, it is more expensive and when new gold is discovered the priced drops and it is less expensive. Gold is also high in demand so when there is a shortage, it is harder for people to obtain so people will be more desperate and will be willing to pay a higher value. The opposite can be said for an increase in gold production. The more gold that is dug up, the more it is available so the price of gold will inflate. Gold will be more abundant to use so the value will drop.

OK, guy's. First of all thank you all for replying and trying to guess what I was thinking.
There is no winner, technically! Someone did come very close and I would have given the prize to him BUT rules are rules. Sorry. Parlousjoe really guessed it right. but it was his second guess. One guess per member I posted. Sorry, Joe! Here is my mentioning it.> @joeykoins said:

No problem joeykoins, after about my 3rd guess and went back up to read what you said, I did see the rule of where you said one guess only. I kind of thought when you said that it was a sticky situation that it might have had something to do with me and my too many guesses lol

I was just having fun of trying to guess what you were thinking and to see if I would get it right, didn't care about winning the coin, but it would have been nice and if you really want to give it away, give it to a YN that someone knows.

Again, I was just having fun trying to think of what you were thinking and had fun playing along lol

Have a goodnight, have a great day at work tomorrow if you have to work and see you around the forum!

unsettled political conditions cause the price of precious metals to rise4.

Calming of the political conditions causes them to drop.

Just thinking the word: "war" causes large increases in value, 'peace' causes the price to frop
