IL Sales Tax on eBay update

eBay and incorrectly applied Illinois Sales Tax here we go again. :#

Well, I finally got through to someone at eBay and the results are mixed.

They first mentioned filling out forms, so I had to explain that the whole coin and paper category is exempt for all buyers in the state and forms would only be for resale purposes.
Finally, the rep said they would escalate the issue to their sales tax department. I asked how long this would take but they couldn't tell me. They said it will eventually be fixed and everyone in Illinois should get a message from eBay about any taxes that were paid in error.

I guess all we can do wait and hope.

Edit: the rep also told me they can't refund the tax at this point; only the sales tax department will be able to act on that at some point down the line.

Had someone send me an invoice tonight and attempted to charge me tax on a coin purchase. Cripes there is no coin tax in the commonwealth! Argued with them and they wouldn't change it because they said coins were taxed in their state. lol Went to attempt checkout and realized eBay automatically removed the tax for me. Getting taxed in other categories but coins, bullion and clothing all still all tax free.

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

    That's my hope.
    We'll see if anything changes.
It seems like we need the bigger fish to complain (big dealers or big buyers; not me) in order to get stuff moving more quickly.

I got APMEX to cancel a transaction due to the incorrect tax. I’m guessing then I LT did it as gold was up post weekend but not the 6% tax I incorrectly was charged. What nonsense

I told them on the phone that people are holding off from buying and sellers aren't able to move as much product. The rep didn't really have a good reply. All they said is you have to wait for the sales tax department and it's only been 6 days into the new policy. Apparently 6 days isn't that long for them and coins aren't super important (at least that is the impression I received from this rep).

Gold and silver coins and gold and silver bullion are exempt from sales tax in IL. It is not a blanket exemption for all numismatic items, but I will defer to others who know the exact ropes better than me. Krugerrands are subject to sales tax in IL.

Pretty much everything is exempt, including Krugerrands

See Section aa in the link below from the state government website

@U1chicago Thank You. I hadn't seen anything like that for six or seven years and I stand corrected. It gives me hope that this issue may be more easily resolved.

I had a buyer from Michigan tonight on ebay send a note saying he was not happy I charged him tax... I had to explain it was not me, it was ebay. He said coins/bullion is not taxed there. I told him he could try calling ebay, but there was not much I could do.

That's the other big problem. Many buyers think it is the seller charging them tax when it isn't.
Maybe if enough people called and complained to eBay, then the volume would be enough to speed up the path towards a resolution.
