A Trip to the Bechtler Site

Well today I was traveling through the area and thought I’d track down the Bechtler site.

The GPS took me to a park filled with Bechtler information and a cool mineshaft.

I’m assuming this is the site of the mint?

Here’s the gate to the entrance of the mineshaft:

Very nice pictures... Too bad one cannot go into the mine tunnel... that would be really interesting (one of my hobbies is spelunking, so tunnels/caves interest me)... Probably insurance worries keep it closed....Thanks for the pictures.... I may have to make a side trip when visiting my daughter in NC....Cheers, RickO

Almost forgot, there is a book about the Bechtlers by Barfield and Strawn. I snagged my copy before the holidays and hope to read thru it soon. 63 pages, about 20 on the history and the rest is a listing of the coins. Many photos. If interested in a copy, they are a bit pricey if you can find one.

Closest I've come was a drive-by on a Sunday also. It would be interesting to go back when things were open if in the area.

I've been to the Conrad Reed gold mine east of Charlotte, but not to the Bechtler site.
At my limit for a day trip, but doable. Now that I've seen a few photos, I'll have to go sometime.

Here is my Bechtler piece (a K4)- NGC AU55 CAC. I've posted it before but it fits this thread.

    That's a beauty!

While I have never owned one I have always found the Bechtler gold to be of interest. The pieces seem to have seen actual use during an early gold rush. I wonder how much gold remains undiscovered in that area?

    All glory is fleeting.

Lots of gold left in Ga but difficult to get.
    The easy pickings are gone.
I used to pan a few specks on my place but not worth the effort.

  • This is a rare coin that has excellent denticles on it. What would you say the sale price is on a numismatic piece like this?

I've never been there, but it looks like it would be an interesting place to visit if in the area.

I'll have to add it to this thread when I go. I'm only a hundred miles or so away from there...
Hopefully I'll go in the next month or two...

The Bechtler coin posted above is sensational.

    I rate the Bechtler site a 64+.
