NEWP. Set of raw FE cents from antique mall.

There went my resolution to not make impulse buys! These are usually super low grade at antique malls. I thought this had potential for an About Uncirculated large letter 58. It’s dirty and doesn’t look as good in the photos as it does in hand.
For me, this was a little bit of a risk. Worst case scenario is an upgrade for my dansco.

I'm seeing strong AU details with minor corrosion and light cleaning. It's a pleasant enough coin, nice pickup if the price was right.

I think it looks corroded too. Maybe it’s just the photo?

That's pretty dang cool. Does it have a retained cud on the reverse?

Based on the pics... The 1857 looks like a nice original XF, & the 1858 LL appears to be AU details. Do you have closeups on the 1858 SL ???

The 58 SL is a little beat up.

    I’m not thinking it’s a cud. Maybe?

I’ll answer that because it’s a question that rarely gets answered. Sort of like if I asked everyone what would you have paid for it? Most would be non-replies.

The ask price was 299. I asked the antique mall clerk to see if they’d accept 250 over the phone. Counter offer was 265 which I almost walked away on. But then thought what the heck. I like them. So I bought at 265.

I like the nice original look the 1857 has. Nice set. Looks good in that holder the way it is. I would not bust it up for an album.

Sorry, but I think you overpaid. The 1858 LL has serious corrosion and was probably cleaned long ago. The 1858 SL has far too many marks for the grade. I regard both as problem coins. The 1857 is OK. Antique mall coins are nearly always badly overpriced and these are no exception.

Well... I think the price may have been a tad high, however, given that it was an antique mall, (items, especially coins, are always overpriced) it was not bad.... I may have purchased that as well...The counteroffer indicates the seller did not have much wiggle room left on the price... Probably purchased it himself for $250 :D Cheers, RickO

Antique dealers usually operate on a 20 year turn ... he had plenty of "wiggle room" left. I stopped looking at antique dealer's coin long ago. It was a waste of time.

The '58 Large Letters is definitely a details coin. Sorry for the unfortunate information.

@291fifth...I agree with your frustration with antique dealers.... and I would not bother with them if not for the fact that there are no coin shops or shows around here... so I am forced to look at the offerings in antique shops - of which we have many, being a summer and winter tourist area....I look, but am not a customer....Cheers, RickO

Decent strikes on all of them. Even if you can get just one to holder, I think you did well...

    GAWRSH !!
I've been away too long. I had no idea the FE had got to the price level they are.
I had a pawnshop colleague who hoarded them and bought every one that I got in.

Great design. Guess it's justified. :)
