I've shook Ric Flair's hand before. I met him at a Gold's gym opening back in the 90s. He about crushed my hand when he shook it. He was a lot bigger in person than I expected.

I went to high school with Bob Corkum, he was in the NHL. I was a freshman when he was a senior, never talked to him but saw him pretty much daily my Freshman year

Close friend with a standardbred horse driver. Knew most of the family pretty well. Had a lot of fun at the tracks. Took a few spins around the oval in the sulky.

Knew Al Iafrate from the gym in Detroit. Not well, but he was a decent guy and kibitzed with most anyone.

Non winners of a bowl of borscht.

Never raced though I would have loved to. Just a few training laps.

You couldn't have done any worse than the ones I did bet on.

A few Buckeyes who went Pro were members at my Golf Club. Also played nine holes with Don Mattingly and Ed Whitson who pitched for the Yankees.

When I was stationed in Colorado Springs back in the mid-1990s, I went to a local sports bar quite a bit, and one of the other regulars there, played for the St Louis Blues in the mid-1970s.

just hung out w/ flair again on new year's eve for a few minutes at a concert in atlanta.

he's shrunk a little w age, but i would never classify him as a big guy in any sense of the word.

but he does have a hellavu grip!

if you see him again, have him regale you with the back breaking plane crash and how he literally crawled away. this was very early career and how he continued to wrestle and for as long as he did is nothing short of remarkable. he's really a very humble guy when you get him away from the "flair" persona and before too many drinks.

I play poker with Bobby Duhon . Very earthy and a fun guy to hang with, oftentimes mentions how fortunate he was to have played for the Giants.

I grew up in the same church as Jason Marquis, former MLB pitcher.

I also have a friend who is best friends with NHL hockey player Paul Mara (sp?). Put simply, I don’t follow hockey so it was semi wasteful on me BUT he was an outstanding guy and I had a blast. Gave us free tickets with great seats, then after it ended we met him in the ‘hospitality box’ - a place I’d never been, where the players meet their families/wives after the game and can have a snack or drink before parting ways after the game. I didn’t know who anybody was aside from a few stars; whoever Sean Avery was dating was very pretty and famous, though I can’t remember who it was. After we finished there, our mutual friend suggested we go out and then hit the clubs. He gave a “we’ll see” look as I think he was shot having just played (a lot, he was pretty good!) but we headed up to Columbus Circle and went to a nice steak place in the Time Warner building (Prime? STK? Can’t remember which circa 2005-06). It was here where I realized why so many athletes end up broke.

Now, I was a guest of a guest. I met Paul that night. As a joke, after the game I said ‘What do I owe you for tickets?’ And we all laughed. But we were a foursome. Two guys he knew well and me, including my friend and a random third I met that night. We stop at a bar before heading up to the place, I get a beer, as does Paul and the two lifelong friends are, quiTe literally, asking the bartender what the most expensive drinks are. After two each, they slide the bill to Paul and leave to go get a table at the steakhouse upstairs. Then they (my friend and random guy) order a meal fit for a king. Seafood tower, high end scotch, TBone, filets, 4-5 sides. When the check comes, I reach for it and MY friend goes, ‘What are you doing?’ And I said, ‘You me and your buddy are splitting this one.’ Their faces dropped and Paul began to lean back and grin. I said, ‘I got free tickets to the game and saw Paul pay the most expensive 8 drink tab I’ve ever seen. Now, reach those penguin arms into your pockets and pull out some paper or plastic.‘ As we got up to leave, Paul said, ‘I may want to go out.’ I said, ‘Have a great time with this two, I am out.’ They all went out and had a great time down at Butterfield 8 downtown - on Paul’s dime of course.

Paul, of course, had the dough and made lots of it. And that was my one run in and we were kids in our 20s. But that expectation - that he should just spend $5-10K on US because he has a lot of money - is a dangerous game that starts from a place of generosity and often ends in squalor or isolation for the athlete. I imagine Paul did well and he seemed like a pretty sharp guy.

Not really. I did graduate High School with Sean Morey. He was named by Peter King as the Sports Illustrated NFL Special Teams player of the decade for the aughts.

I guess he looked bigger in person because I was so young. I was used to seeing him on TV in the ring, so it was really weird seing him up close in person. He was really nice though.

Back in the 80's, I was friends with an Eagles special teamer/4th or 5th WR who I met through a guy I worked with. Ended up doing some financial planning and tax work for him. He was on the team for 3 years. During that time, he put me in touch with Leroy Harris, Eagles fullback and I did some planning work for him for a short time. They were both down to earth people and nice to know and deal with. Also got to know pitcher who grew up and played baseball with my nephew in high school. Got to know him as he was always at their house. He did make it to the bigs, they converted him from on OF to a P and got to the majors in the Blue Jay pen. Blew his arm out in his second year after they signed him to a four year deal and he never pitched again.
If coaches count, I went to high school and sat next to to the former St Joseph's basketball coach, Phil Martelli.

Yes, I don't like to brag, but I also met the jockstrap washer for the Washington Redskins during their 1996 season.
