Try your hand (or rather your eyes) at grading this mint state buffalo nickel that has been slabbed.

I'll guess MS63. But what is going on with that enormous brush on the tail?
Au 58
MS60
MS62....and that could be a tad generous... Or, the huge picture might be detrimental to grade guesses. Cheers, RickO

Well here is picture of the slab and the grade.

Wow seems somewhat generous imo, slab is sure scratched up too.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
This coin has seen many dealer transactions and would seem to indicate it is overgraded
HMMM....................no comment.

I think it is overgraded, don't send it for the regrade!
I would have guessed 63. Sometimes hit free surfaces bump the grade, even with coins with soft strikes.
Looks to be overgraded to me.
Here is another graded 1913 type one buff, same ms66 grade, also a type one, same grader

And on the above pictured coin I would give it no better than a 64 and that might be a stretch. Too many ugly spots on the chief’s face. The actual slab picture for the above coin follows

I know it's easy to say this now but not based on the picture ( except it doesn't look like anything special ) but the fact you even posed this question the surprise has to be much higher than it looks and I was going to say MS66 just because you asked. Mine only got a MS-65. If CAC didn't give it a gold bean I would have to do something about it.
Those are mushy strikes for a 1913 T1.
First one looks to be far over graded to me... 58 at best but I guess that's why I'm not a grader.
Question for an advanced (Buys very high-grade nickels) Buffalo nickel collector:
Ignoring the scratched up cases (the coins would look much better if sent back for "Reholder Service"), I'd like to read your description of the two MS-66 nickels you posted as they would be written up in a major auction.
After that (if you chose to comment) perhaps you'll let us know what attracted you to these two MS-66 gems. Was it their price, color, etc? If you do that, IMO we can all learn a lot more from this GTG discussion.
You see, when a member blurts out a grade or shows a TPGS label without stating reasons for the opinion, these discussions become just a personal guessing game where there are few incorrect answers and we take away little additional knowledge about why a particular coin receives a particular grade. Calling an MS-66 coin a 63, 64, 0r 65 teaches me nothing. I'm here to learn too!
Funny story. My first purchase through the mail from a well-respected dealer was a 1913 5c. Looking back, he sent me a weakly struck, mark-free, frosty gem (possibly because I was young and a first-time customer). I knew nothing about "strike" at the time and returned the coin because - lacking all of its details - I thought it was circulated. I told him to keep my money and use it for a subscription to his future catalogs.
TO INSIDER2 AND ALL
Nothing especially attracted to these two coins except that their condition did match what I considered an ms66 to be.
That being said I am not bad mouthing the grading service(s). Ask you self this question. lf you were putting together, say a date set of buffalo nickel in ms65 -- ms66 -- ms67 condition and a dealer friend of yours sent you the pictures of the coins here what would you say? Would you want to add either of these two coins to your set? Actually the second coin has been on eBay a long long time and no one has bitten on it yet. And
I mean a really long loong looong loooooong time! Thats because on the second coin IMO of all the obverse spots that the coin has developed over time probably while in the holder. And as to the first coin it does not “reach out and grab you” at first glance. At second glance it appears to be overtraded, plain and simple. In summary I guess we all have to remember that grading is just someones subjective opinion. More comments appreciated.
