Searched through some 300+ 2x2's at a Chicago coin shop I won't share, I was pleasantly surprised seeing this coin although my shoulder now hurts having not done such a search for some time. Grades MS64 with a medium to full strike with subtle luster and dark toning and a trace of lathe tool bit lines at 11 o'clock. I'm placing this coin in a 2nd set.
Stuck here in Chicago for over a month now without my camera so there are no pictures or car but have managed to attend one coin show and one B/M.

No camera on the phone? Or the laptop?
Looks like I'm in need of a manicure on the finger.

Yep ... looks like a manicure is in order!
Nice coin.
Wow! Nice find for such a Key coin in the Jefferson Series. Congrats. Here I am posting Full Steps from 2019 and 2018. Then I notice your find. Wow! Are you going to send it in? I would.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Congrats, but from the pictures I can only tell it's a 3-stapled 2x2.

Nice find...and if indeed FS, a good price....Cheers, RickO
……..if indeed it's 6 Steps! But is the coin all there in strike, condition, luster and maybe some color......er, (for you ricko) beautiful erosion. lol

A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.

Will the ding in the third step from the bottom... right side as viewed, affect the 'six step' rating?? I hope not.... Great nickel... Cheers, RickO
When I started collecting, (when I was about 10 yrs old), the 50 D Jefferson was one of the key coins to find in change... Back then, I can remember thinking it was in the same league as a 09 S vdb cent or 16 D dime. Never found any of them in change.
Nice looking nickel.
Congratulations!
No.....they're not perfect steps and what's the ratio of coins/steps without nicks being the step area is a high point on the reverse. And just how many coins have been stamped with 6 steps? Not many....I'm now aware of only 3, possibly 4 in MS 63 to 66 grade, I have two.. The severity of an intrusion on the steps always needs to be weighed......and the coin is the best of what can reasonably expect for a date. But a severe mark on a high grade would be disappointing.
Recently, I was looking at a 42-S, very prooflike, MS66, very EDS strike, perfect full steps but not FS by our host ?, for $25! Beautiful coin for the exception of two severe nicks on Jefferson's ear. I had a second look at that coin and decided I can't have it and passed on it
My 60-D is a great example, a coin from Bern Nagengast, who personally gives his opinion in a written letter in great detail about those steps. I have this letter. But just how many survivable examples are available out there? They (all coins grading MS65 and higher) must pass all the qualities in strike, condition and steps.

Nice find. Every chance I have had to go through a box of 2x2's, everything is lower grade.vvwgen it is marked FS......it's not. Congrats.

Yes, I recently visited a number of B/M shops (4) in or near Chicago of their 2x2's and whatever they had certified which was very little. One shop had a couple dozen, all 44-D's. lol Another had mostly MS60 - 63, few 64's and rarely a MS65 and higher in 2x2's, whoever graded were spot on. And, of course, I didn't want any of them. One shop I stopped at, having called a day or two before, to hear what they had, I swear, they actually assembled a coin album set of newly stapled 2x2's the night before and the two guys that stood there and watched were stunned when I went through the album in like a minute, the coins were all crap. I did manage to pick out a couple coins for a couple bucks to make some kind of sale for them, one coin being an enhanced 2017-S I could have lived without. After apologizing for not buying more, I left taking note, I need to get more precise with my questions/what I'm after when I talk to these people over the phone.
i called several shops over a 3 month period and most had nothing or little of anything to search through.. They would say they had a little of this or that and that they ship out most of what comes in. One shop number I called was actually a fax number. Their website ad stated they were opened, they were about a 15 minute drive and they weren't open.
In all, I found decent coins in a 38-D MS66 5.25 steps, toned 39-D MS65 5.50 steps, slightly toned 42-D MS65 5.50 steps, 43-D/D 501 MS66 slightly rough 5.50 steps, ugly toned 47-P MS64 5 steps, 50-D MS64 6 steps, toned 72P Ms65 5.25 steps, 89-D and 92-P, all with very nice strikes, of course. I'll post some of these later once I get them photographed correctly.
