BIG NEWS from the Dimeman..........

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm selling my Washington Quarters. I felt I needed to scale back and stay more focused on my Dimes and Variety Type Set. It was fun while it lasted, but all good things must come to an end.

Rather than post all of these on the BS&T I will just leave the set out there and delete coins as I sell. You can use the link in my sig line to view my set and see the coins that are left. Just PM me with any interest.

Your “big news” should be posted on BST.

No offense intended but that is a pretty pedestrian set, with a side of self promotion.

If it is OK for Legend, it is OK for collectors too IMHO.

That's what I would ordinarily think too, but there seemed to be a consensus in recent threads that precedent had been set for spamming the U.S. Coin Forum and that it was OK by many.

    @jmlanzaf said:
Legend posts a public sale, not a private one. Legend also pays PCGS for advertising that appears elsewhere on the site. Legend is also a top 3 or 4 auction firm.

It's irrelevant. If every major/industry recognized firm posted sales ads (including auctions) here, the forum would be overwhelmed with sales ads. The purpose of the anti-spam rule was to avoid this. You also overlook a number of dealers here accept large consignments of quality coins and many are on par with what you would expect from a Legend sale. Ian from GC is a big advertiser here as are Heritage and Stacks if I am not mistaken. Numerous major dealers are as well. None of them spam the U.S. Coin Forum like the post I referenced.

I'm not sure why you'd blatantly misrepresent this. There was no consensus that it was proper for individual members to advertise sales in the US Coin forum. There wasn't even anyone supporting that. The discussion had to do with major companies announcing upcoming auctions, which represents a handful of companies posting such announcements a handful of times throughout a year. If every member who wanted to sell a coin or set posted an ad to this forum, that would clearly be a serious problem. As such, I would have preferred this announcement go in the OP's sig line in addition to his making a post on the BST, but I'm not going to make a stink about a single transgression from a long-standing member. I know I can rely on others here to do that... :p

There was no misrepresentation in my post. Numerous posters were okay with the spam from a certain auction house. A tagged moderator did nothing, and the current President of PCGS posted a smiley face. If that isn't approval, I don't know what is. Of course it is their forum and they can adopt whatever rules they want. The long standing rule has been no commercial posts in the main coin forum. Apparently that is no longer the case. That's fine, but let's apply that uniformly. There are many individuals (not specific to any one poster) that seem to think the forum rules are below them and that they are free to do as they wish. What is good for them is good for the rest of the forum as well.

Also you repeatedly attempt to distinguish the scenarios based on the identity of the poster. I also see no reason to distinguish between corporate and private collectors. Both could theoretically have nice coins. As for the significant holdings argument, I think that is bunk. I'm sure there were nice coins, but we are not talking about a Pogue/Newman type of offering but a normal monthly or quarterly offering. While nice, it was hardly block bluster. GC, Stacks-Bowers, Heritage, Kagins, David Lawrence, and every major dealer that offers a few dozen quality coins at the time on eBay would fit in the same class/level. At that point the BST is redundant so we might as well get rid of it all together.

Your argument also misses the point of the anti-spam rule which was to prevent commercial posts from wasting screen real estate that is reserved for discussions of serious coin threads including the educational. The identity of the poster is relevant for that purpose. So what I'm really saying is: Spam on everyone!

The quality/desirability of the material and the identity of the poster/seller, shouldn't make any difference. Everyone has their own preferences and hopefully they don’t get to decide on their own what’s OK.

I never check the BST, so I'm glad that DM brought the sale to my attention.

I am not bothered that he posted this here, at all.

There are no pix/prices, etc.....just a longtime poster making an announcement about his future collecting direction/goals.

He even states to PM him for further info.

Don't think any rules were broken.

If it is okay with the hosts, it shouldn't be. Any dealer here could clutter up the entire forum with pictures of (possibly) wonderful coins that are for sale. Putting them in BST is necessary to keep this forum usable for something other than classified ads.

And it's not that an occasional commercial post derails anything. But there have been a number of them recently. Unchecked, we will end up regretting the relaxation of the rules.

I wish Heather could temporarily move the entire BST onto this forum just so people see what it would do to any numismatic discussions should that happen.

The OP did break the rules as this thread is purely self-promotion. Now, I wouldn't mind so much if he would at least admit that and move on. To defend his position as "OK" taints his credibility.

I would have no problem because like @Walkerfan I don't go to BS&T very often and would miss this offering. I really don't see the problem. The thread didn't take up any more space than if I had just said I'm changing my focus and not mentioned selling. Like I said no pics no prices just a statement saying PM me.

In your original post, along with noting a turn in your collecting you stated you had coins for sale and to PM you if interested.

"I'm selling my Washington Quarters. ... Just PM me with any interest."

Even without pictures or prices, that's still advertising. Is it okay to do that if you're a longtime poster? That's up to the people who run the message board.

"I don't go to BS&T very often and would miss this offering. I really don't see the problem."

Suppose everybody who's currently posting stuff for sale on the BST thought the same thing, and started threads here (without pictures or prices) with requests for PMs. Do you see the problem now? ;)

  • Tom147Tom147 Posts: 1,484 ✭✭✭✭✭

My goodness !!!!! I can see both sides of this. On the one hand, once you open up the " can of worms " where does it end ? Let the moderators decide. On the other hand, Dimeman simply stated he was selling his Washingtons. No prices, no grades, " PM me " I have no problem with what Dimeman did. Seems to me some posters wanna complain, just to complain. Leave it alone already. If our hosts have a problem with it, let them take care of it.

    @DelawareDoons PLease explain yourself.

I am glad @Dimeman replied to you and I feel that someone else has to call you out on your very rude and inappropriate comment. Even forgetting about whether or not you believe @Dimeman should have posted this, your "pretty pedestrian set" comment is absolutely outrageous. If my fellow forum members agree, let me know. This kind of dismissive remark is not what this place is about.

This is not the first time such belittling comments toward others collections/sets have been posted here; including at least one such instance by the OP himself.

If that is the case, I am not aware of it. And it wouldn't change my point anyway.

I have never to my knowledge belittled a persons set. Years ago I use to bash moderns and Bullion, but changed my ways on that. Everyone should collect what the like and want.

I don’t really care that it was posted here (although definitely shouldn’t be) I’m just wondering how this is “BIG NEWS” that seems a bit dramatic/click baity to me. I thought maybe you discovered a new variety or found a pan pac $50 gold coin in a coin star machine or something.

No offense intended but that is a pretty pedestrian set, with a side of self promotion.

Others including myself think is a very nice to great set. I never claimed it was #1 it was in fact #8. I have no idea what you mean by self promotion. I simply stated it was for sale.

I'm just pointing out that at times almost everyone here has made a comment or two that maybe could have been worded differently/better so no need to get up in arms is all.

    I strongly recommend Great Collections
Why go thru all the trouble of selling those quarters?
Mailing each quarter can get a bit costly!
