Received my first Dansco Album today. Hmmm......

I have been at this now for over a year and currently have 10 albums. All Whitman and Littleton. Today I received my first Dansco album (mainly because of availability of them relocating I guess) and I'm not impressed at all.
When I open the album it does not lay flat, it wants to close back up. When trying turn the first page it was hanging up on the binding piece that has the two rivets that holds everything together. After further investigation the pages do not have protection around the holes of the pages. And lastly when I want to remove the mylar protective sheet I have to rub my thumb across the face of a coin which in time can leave scratches on the coin and/or damage that sheet. See pictures below.

Between the three albums I prefer the Littleton albums hands down for the following reasons. It is a binder style album so when I open it up it lays flat and does try to pop closed. When turning the pages they do not hang up at all. The pages have ferrules in each hole to protect the page and for ease of turning the page. And each page has a thumb notch cut into the end of the page to pull out the protective sheet which will result in minimal scratches to my coins and less friction on the sheet which means less or no scratches on the protective sheets.

The prices are comparable but to me the quality is not. Please offer any rebuttal to what I have presented. I would be glad to her what you all have to say.

As a matter of fact, if someone wants this album I would be glad to ship it to you for free. I will never use it!!

EDITED TO SAY SOMEONE HAS CLAIMED THE DANSCO AND I SEND IT OFF IN A DAY OF SO

I have both Littleton and danscos. The littletons bind up on the rings more to me. I have about 15 danscos and I like them better. Most new albums also don't lay flat as they don't come full of pages. They are designed to add more pages and then they will lay flat. I do agree with having to slightly lick your thumb to slide a mylar out but I've never seen one scratch any of my coins. Just a slight move and you can pull it out the end. Usually if I have to slide one out, its because I'm filling a hole. I stick my thumb at the empty slot to slide it out.

The Dansco spine is supposed to be tight, solid. This precludes the need for a lot of reinforcement of the page holes for the rivets. Myself, I always buy enough extra pages to make sure the spine fits totally solid (they sell like three different width sizes of covers). I can always use the extra storage. In fact, most of my Danscos are blank pages in a blank cover/binder.

Danscos will "wear in." New, they're stiff but that cures itself pretty quickly.

I also always pulled out ALL the slides on a new one. Sometimes they were sort of stuck. Not after pulling them out though. I used pliers on that first pullout.

Those ferrules are a nice idea. :)

I have a variety of albums for my raw coins but I prefer the Littleton, Whitman and Intershield archival albums over Dansco...

As presentation goes, all those albums beat boxes of 20, hands down. I appreciate your assessment of them all. And they work good, on a bookshelf in a study.

The mint should check thickness of albums to know when to change a coin design. :D

I find the Littleton albums too bulky, even if they are well-constructed. I prefer Dansco, myself.

If you had kept the album and placed coins into it I think you would have found that the album will stay open just fine and the pages will loosen up with a few uses. But I do agree and I wish the Dansco albums had a better way of pulling out the slides.

I like them both... Except with those mylar sliders that I prefer not to use, especially on the proofs which I keep in seperate capitol plastic holders. I also like the old card style holders (Oberwise,, & Whitman) for those business strike coins.

I use a tweezers to pull out the slides on my Dansco albums which contain mint state and proof coins and I will also insert a new coin from the reverse side and slide the mylar over the reverse rather than the obverse of the coin as another precaution against a slide mark on a cheek. I like the look of the Danscos when they're in a row on the shelf. @bsshog40 - I like the custom made Kennedy album!

A rubber "thumb" that fits over the fingertip works for me when removing the slides.

I really hate that Dansco fills up the last page of an album with empty holes for which there is no coin. Indian Head cents and Franklins come to mind. As a collector I hate seeing empty holes once the collection is complete.

I like the Dansco albums, but will never miss a chance to complain about the inclusion of 1842 Small Date Proof Only in the seated quarter album. 6 known examples. No other proofs in the album. How hard would it have been to include the 1842-O Small Date instead? I hope to complete this album in the decades to come, with the exception of that darn hole. :)

I have a few albums... from years ago...rarely even open them anymore... I like slabs and raw coins...The last 'series' I did was the CC Morgans...and the ASE's which I stopped when they skipped a year... except for a few of the ASE specials..I also have a Kennedy album... stopped adding to that around 2008/9... Cheers, RickO
