Complete Copper Sets

The largest category of patterns are fantasy coins produced for collectors, often production designs in off metals. I found this latest Heritage auction description interesting which says that collectors were putting together full copper sets of coins. Do we know of any collectors that were creating these complete copper sets? Would you want such a set today?

Previously termed a die trials strike, it is much more likely these pieces were struck for sale to collectors as part of complete copper sets.

I may be a bit confused... would not these sets be comprised of copies/counterfeits?...Not sure why someone would do that...Cheers, RickO

Perhaps if these were made by someone other than the US Mint, but this was a time when the US Mint was taking orders for custom fantasy pieces. I consider this the "Golden Age" of pattern collecting when lots of patterns were being created and distributed. Today we have so few patterns being introduced to collectors.

It's kind of like in Game of Thrones where there are only 3 dragons when we watch the show but in an earlier age there were hundreds or even thousands. These patterns are from an age gone by.
