My wife and I bought an 1890 farmhouse a little over two years ago. For this area of New Hampshire that is not a very old house, but it is still yielding interesting things from time to time. So we would like to get a metal detector and drive ourselves crazy digging up old horse shoes and tin cans while we search for something of value. There are not a lot of places selling detectors around here, actually there is not much around here at all.
I did a search on here about beginning and found threads a few years old. We will be looking on line for what we end up buying. What do we need to look at and are there any brands to just stay away from?
All suggestions are welcome.
Thankx

Kellyco in Florida has always treated me well. They have a nice website
They might have some good sales now
I always recommend White's Detectors for quality and customer service. Also get a wall detector... never know what is behind those old walls... Cheers, RickO
You need a detector with a display that shows the likely metal and depth. I use two detectors, a Whites and a Tesoro and neither one has a display. I can usually tell iron or ferrous metals by the sounds but have no idea on others and have no idea on depth. But, keep in mind that I'm in the desert and will dig every target no matter. But, you could at least tell the depth with a display and that would help a lot I suspect.
Just my two bits.
good luck,
bob
Just make sure you have a iron discriminator. Good luck. Post your finds!
