YN designation for PCGS sets

Should PCGS have a small icon to put next to sets being completed by YN's (young numismatists)? I know of at least one Franklin set where YN is added in the title. Would it help others to know that this is a young collector? There are several YN's participating on this forum, so I wonder how many sets are being done by them.

What constitutes young? Do I qualify? image

  • I see the smiley, but others may not know: The ANA draws the line at 21 years of age. Most Regional clubs and local coin clubs stop giving the YN discount at 18.

Compared to most people I see at shows, I'm still in the young category image

That's an excellent idea! We need to do everything we can to encourage the younger collectors.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

We should let Ken have an OTHN icon as well now. image

Actually, I suggested the idea to PCGS a while ago, and they said they would consider it. But so far nothing further. I believe the set you are referring to is my son's Franklin set, or possibly my other son's Washington set. I still like the idea. Give the set an ICON and perhaps from time to time recognize a finest YN set.

  • I agree Typetone. They should have an award for YN's. They are the future PCGS submitters and are on a differet level of competition in the PCGS registry sets. PCGS has the potential to get the next generation of coin collectors into their ranks which can only help them.

    Greg,

It's great to see your kids taking an early interest in the hobby.

My granddad gave me a couple of Whitman albums and a bunch of circulated Lincolns when I was about 10. I filled the Lincolns out as much as I could and eventually gave up.

Going through my closet, my ex saw the albums and suggested I try and finish them out, and here I am today. Congrats to both boys on great sets in progress.

If this is implemented, can I have an OG icon next to mine?image

At first thought, I didn't like this designation. But as I think about it more I think it can be a good thing. Maybe instead of the vitriol, a person in the registry can go a tiny bit out of their way to congratulate the young person and offer them some insight. It can't help but bring good things into the hobby if that happened. Or maybe a separate registry for they young people and the rest of us? That way they have a chance to crack the top 10000 and not compete against people who have access to lots of money - a more fair playing ground for them?

  • Yeah, that would be a good idea . Ever since the wieghting my set went down a lot and people with less ,worser graded coins went above me. It would be a nice reward.
    Justin.
  • I personally think the YN age should be 25 and below, the significance of turning 25 being that your car insurance drops significantly, thus leaving more money available for coins. People aged 24 and below are spending all that extra money on car insurance and can't afford as nice of coins.

(The fact that I'm 23 has NOTHING to do with this. I promise! imageimage )
  • I have talked with BJ and it will be put on a to-do list. Thanks alot BJ.

    fine idea.
  • It can only help. The age will probably be 18, but all the deatils have to be worked out and put on the to-do list. Thanks for everyone's imput.

Poor idea. It'll only encourage YNs to focus on what is wrong with the Registry and that is that the grade is the only thing important.

    Gmarguli:

The registry says buy the grade, and so you must.

  • so thats what the YN stands for.... I've had it by my name for the longest time and had no idea why because no one else in the list of Proof Franklins had it. Plus, my collection of slabs is so weak( I only have one) that I couldnt see why I was getting some special designation. Most of my coins are raw because I don't have much money.

  • Mike. You can take off the icon if you are not a YN anytime. Just go like you are editing the set and click on the "No" tab for the YN designation.
