If you think ebay is wacky.....

You should check out Etsy! I think it might be the source of some of the new collectors who think parking lot coins are valuable errors.

I did a search on the net for "spitting eagle quarter" and they had a bunch. Many different dates, mostly blurry pictures and well worn coins. There was one listed at $60,000 and another bargain at just $50,000! I don't think they were even spitting eagles, although one had a black mark near the beak. :D

Yesterday for some reason Etsy popped up on my phone and there was a rare worn Bicentennial quarter for just $2,000. Also many average wheaties worth three cents that were listed for hundreds or thousands of dollars each. Sad.

The wife is not happy because Etsy is supposed to be (or was) for home made items like the fabric art she sells there.

Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.

Etsy is like when you go down a alley and buy some “Rolex” watches at a good price :) Etsy has a lot of stuff. I actually enjoy browsing for cheap stuff and trinkets around holiday times. But the quality and time it takes to receive your items is poor. But yes I would not recommend buying anything numismatic wise lol

They have a section on there and there are multiple castes coins. Entire sets. I wonder what laws come into play with that Bc I am sure there are geniuses around the states who have purchased them and tried there darnedest to sell.

Admittedly, it's been at least a year since I've used Etsy and maybe things have changed. So I'm sure there is cheap stuff, trinkets, and items comparable to fake Rolexes, however, most of the stuff I search for is high quality stuff. Delivery times can vary as it is often custom made by hand to order. I obviously no nothing about the OP and his wife, but I doubt her fabric art is poor quality. In fact I'd be willing to bet the quality is quite exceptional. A lot of the artists selling that type of stuff are very skilled and experienced.

There is a guy on my local FB market place selling a "penny" for $130,000. He claims it's worth well over $250,000 if it was graded, he just does not have the time to send it in. So, "his loss is our gain" lol. Also, the only other things this guy has listed are 1990s Mustang parts and stereo speakers lol.

Etsy is good for some things - like the kind of stuff it started out with - craft and artsy things.

But it is turning into the Wild West - like eBay was years ago.

  • I'm guessing that Etsy doesn't have a problem with these sales because they generate CLICKS which is the new money.

But Davideo is correct there is lots of nice original artwork on there. My wife thinks she has to make stuff that is on the cheaper end of the scale but I am trying to convince her to go more arty and less functional/decorative.
