Picked up a nice set of ten Davis Cathedral medals. To grade or not?

Just got this nice set of ten English cathedral medals by Davis. All have very nice proof like surfaces. With the original felt trays. I haven't seen them much nicer than these. Would you get them graded? I do like the idea of protecting them and knowing the grade, but, I do like the look of them with the original felt trays. Thanks and happy holidays.

    Very nice looking medals.

I collect Jacques Weiner architectural/cathedral medals. Never heard of Davis.
What's their composition silver, bronze, brass?
    How big are they?
    Are they uni-face?

    Thanks for sharing.

I collect the Wiener medals as well. I consider the Davis medals a close 2nd to those. The details are very nice on the images. The lettering just always felt a little heavy handed looking to me. These are all white metal. I have heard of a few bronze ones though. they are 2-3/8" diameter. They have the exterior view on one side and the interior on the other.

I'm glad you're the one who got it. I was countered offer to buy that for 440 British pound shipped but I declined due to I already have 8 out of the 10 medals on that set but now I kind of regret not buying it due to the nice quality. Congrats.
Looks like we are collecting medals by same designer. You posted a set of Wiener medals on Sept 11th. I posted a 5 medals set of Wiener's also on Nov 19th. I have J. Davis 6 medal set in original case and now you have the 10 medal set.
    Congrats again and good luck.

They are beautiful medals... certainly at least a close second to the Wiener medals...Congratulations on a nice acquisition. Cheers, RickO

When I saw the set up I knew you must have thought about it. I saw your set of five and it is very nice as well. I would love to have an original case that isn't damaged. This set does make the perfect match to my set of five English Wiener medals. Hopefully I can keep them for a long time.

Very nice! How often do they come in the original case? When were these minted?

Here's a few samples of Joseph Davis medals with looks like all different kind of metals. Lichfield cathedral is bronze for sure and all the same size of 60mm. York cathedral is pewter I think and not sure what kind of metals is Westminster Abbey and Oxford Cathedral. I also have a set of six medals by J.Davis in original case. Just like you I also collect Wiener's medals and was fortunate enough to pick up a set of 5 medals in original case last month.

Enjoy collecting those medals and thanks.

A very nice looking set. I would keep it in the original holder as I doubt the cost of slabbing them could be recovered if it came time to sell.

Besides, I would want to enjoy the architectural details in gloved hand with a strong magnifier. Ho ho ho!

I don't slab medals myself, especially if they are in their original display case. Lovely set as is.

Yeah, I love doing that with the loop as well. I also really enjoy taking pictures with a variety of lighting on these and the Wiener medals. I am just worried about ocean air on the finish because I am close to the coast. So, I guess I will continue to debate with myself about slabbing.

A benefit of getting the slabbed is that they would be protected and you can get TrueViews or PhotoVisions.

That being said, it is nice to hold things raw. Let us know what you decide!

They are gorgeous. Congrats for picking them up!
