Why are 6th edition cherry pickers guides so expensive?

So was going to buy a new cherry pocker guide but..... everyone is out of stock. I have found used ones for 200 to 400 dollars for the cent and nickel book and I have found new ones for over 1000 dollars? What's going on? They were printed in 2015.

WAG- dealers got tired of cherrypickers camping out at their tables at shows and not buying anything unless they could rip it, so they bought up all the guides they could find and burned them.
Or maybe it's something else entirely.
I thought you were nuts....until I checked Amazon. Sure enough, they are crazy expensive.
I'd suggest poking around local coin shops. They may have them left over from a purchase long ago....and probably don't track the going rate of standard books(?!)
High asking prices on Amazon for out-of-print books are often speculative,
even generated by a computer algorithm.
It doesn't mean they are actually selling at those prices, of course.
On abebooks.com , you can find the softcover vol. 1 (6th edition) for $50 used.

Or vol. 2 (5th edition; latest made) for $50 used.

True enough....Check Wizard Coin Supply, and both volumes are under $30,,,,
But both of the 6th editions on wizard are out of stock. All tje places tha are still 30 to 40 dollars are out of stock!

But they are out of stock of both volumes.
Missed that....
Guess that means they really ARE getting scarce in the marketplace.....
I just bought 300 varieties and alot of them are not attributed. The collector I bought them from knew they were varieties but didnt take the time to figure out what ones. I was going to get a new set of books since mine is from 2008 or the fifth issue and when i saw the prices i couldnt believe it!
HAPPY COLLECTING
Has Whitman offered any guidance as to when the next edition might appear? That would tell me something about chasing edition six.
They are likely small print runs and unless someone could convince the printer to print another run, you're out of luck. Any rumors of a new edition should drop the aftermarket like a rock,
I bought mine from the wizard coins maybe put your name on their list if they have such a thing.
@Dentuck do you have any comments on this?
I just went through the history of Wizard and Abe’s books must of got them both in EBay. But man prices are crazy.
Since JT passed I have doubts about the new edition making it to print.
Small print runs are a big reason I think ebooks are good for publishers.
Ebooks are good for readers because they take up less space and are searchable.
The (relative) permanence of the printed book is more reassuring to me.
Same kinda reassurance that 90% silver coin gives me.
Yes, the next planned update is the 6th edition of Volume II, due in 2020. See this thread from May 2019:

@yosclimber Whenever that new book comes to pass, I will be a buyer.
Not something that I do a lot of, but still valuable information nonetheless.
It’s coming. A month or so ago Bill consulted with me on a piece of art for the cover.
I am quite shocked the book has became expensive. The ebay solds are interesting the last year.
.
You would be far better off just doing your own research...I'm just saying!
Early American Copper, Bust and Seated.
I have the Sixth Edition vol 1 and Fifth Edition vol 2.... Was not looking for the new ones.... And certainly not at those prices.... These will serve me very well... Cheers, RickO

That is a rare variety and makes it 5 times more valuable than the normal.
So then you create your own numbering system and everyone is just supposed to know what you are referring to when you have an OP-13a variety?
New one is set to be printed next june I hear. 150 new varieties and a few deletions
Sorry for taking a month to reply! I just saw this thread.
Yes, the next Cherrypickers' Guide (sixth edition, volume II, covering half dimes through gold, commems, bullions, and more) is in the works and will be published in time for the ANA show in August 2020.
We're adding several entirely new coin types, dramatically expanding quite a few sections, deleting, adding, modifying, updating. Bill Fivaz is heavily involved, and the volume editor is Larry Briggs, who's been doing a huge amount of heavy lifting to bring things up to date.
That's me in the photo above, with Bill Fivaz. For several months we were meeting in person every week for a few hours, not to mention countless emails, phone conferences, one road trip for a powwow in Chattanooga . . . and coffee. Lots and lots of caffeine.
Awesome news! I, too, was dismayed at the current prices I saw on Amazon. I’m not big into varieties but I like the idea of looking for some fun ones now and then.
Best of wishes to you guys and good luck!
Looks like not enough printed to meet demand.High printing costs for a small print run means higher selling price. Hopefully the problem will be solved for a while once the new one is available.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
Fortunately for me, I bought both fifth editions for $20 each shortly after release. The new crazy msrp on the sixth editions indicates extremely poor marketing for not having secured orders. Do they know their market share? IMHO. Peace Roy

@Namvet69: Roy, MSRP didn't change between the fifth and sixth editions. (Or between the fourth and fifth.) $20 is a great newp pickup!
I contacted Whitman Publishing late last year and was told that the CPGuide Vol. 1 6th edition will be available later this year (I assume to coincide with the release of Vol 2). I do hope they didn't misunderstand me and simply give me the information regarding volume 2. Their reply message was very brief.
I too have been hunting for this book for some time. I couldn't find it even at at Long Beach this past month, but I also didn't get to attend until Saturday when many tables have already begun putting merchandise away.
The sixth edition, volume II (covering half dimes through gold, commems, bullion, and U.S./Philippine coins) will be released this year.
The most recent book covering half cents through nickel five-cent pieces was the sixth edition, volume I.
The next new book covering half cents through nickel five-cent pieces would be the seventh edition, volume I (publication date to be determined).
There has been some discussion at Whitman about possibly reprinting the sixth edition, volume I, as a straight reprint --- not as a substantive editorial update from a content perspective, but simply to relieve the pressure for collectors who want the book's core information without having to pay $100+ (or whatever the going price is).
I hope this information helps clear things up. Let me know if you have any other questions.

6th Edition Volume II is on Amazon for pre-order, $39.95, expected by September, 2020.

Dentuck, what is your minimum print run for a straight reprint? You could do a pre-sale or even a gofundme and see if there was sufficient demand. Just the normal literature dealers might step up for a few hundred.
interesting that Vol II will include U.S./Philippine coins
why would someone pre-order a book 6 month ++++ in advance?
Economies of scale come into play, of course. We would want to keep the retail low enough for the book to be affordable for those who want it. Print-On-Demand might be an option.
@Dentuck thanks for your response and candor. Peace Roy

We're looking into various electronic options, in addition to a full print run of spiral-bound hardcover books.
Wow! Prompt reply. Thanks again.

Just two days ago I placed my pre-order. Seeing the demand for the 6th edition of volume 1 and not knowing if a much larger quantity of volume II will be printed (my guess is the quantity will indeed be larger), I pre-ordered for anticipated September delivery. Why?
1. Amazon doesn’t charge my card until they ship.
2. They guarantee the lowest price through the day they ship. Typically that price is lower than the retail price.
3. Fast Shipping is free to me via Amazon Prime.
Since I know I want the book, I don’t see ANY disadvantage to what I did. @davewesen , let me know if you end up receiving your book before me, and at a price less than what I get charged. I doubt you will come out ahead on either point.

Why are 6th edition cherry pickers guides so expensive?
Good books are not cheap...cheap books are not good.

I dunno, small price to pay for Cherry Picking a coin that could be hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I just hope they hold up the cent version for years. I am tired of searching and picking and would prefer to get some upgrades at this point.
