Ground coin?

Black 1998d with gold color. Ugly nickel for sure just never came across a nickel like this. Could it be any thing else beside corrosion? Just try to learn a bit.

Environmental damage.
Coins do not leave the mint looking like that. But the 75Cu25Ni alloy used in nickels (and the outer clad layers of dimes - halves) will react with numerous things in the environment.
Yep... that nickel has been in an unfriendly environment and suffered the consequences....Cheers, RickO

Looks like cat-sick. I have seen one other coin look like that. We took an old half dollar and tried several different ways to clean it. After dips and polishes, etc etc. It looked like cat-sick to us.
