Quarter error? Possible value? (w pics)

RoflesRofles Posts: 752 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello coin folk! I’m a card collector and know nothing of coins outside of their face value 🙂. So my father in law found this in his change cup; it’s missing the date on the front and some lettering above the eagle on back. He took it to a local coin shop where they offered him 100$ for it on the spot. Apparently the mold was cracked when minting And this is the result (per local coin shop). My Father in law was curious if something like this could be worth substantially more than 100$? I searched the forum to see if there was perhaps an existing thread, but was unable to locate one. If there is could someone please link for me to read up? TIA, cool coins everybody! I’ve enjoyed going through some threads here! 😁

    Interesting location for a cud. As to value, perhaps the error specialists could chime in.

    Similar pieces have sold on eBay for $40-$80, with one apparent outlier at $150. $100 would appear to be more than fair for an offer.

    @Rofles

    $100 from a brick and mortal coin shop (with all their overhead) was a great offer. Take it back and sell and hopefully it doesn’t go down.

    If that cud was in a different location so the date showed it might have been worth more.

    Based on the blurry pics the quarter was probably minted at Philly.

    Also, the “mold” is called a “die.”

    Great error, and from circulation no less.

    If he is inclined to sell, take that $100 and run.
