There are still treasures to be found on Ebay: Bechtler $1

Inspired by Asheland's recent post on his acquisition of a Bechtler gold dollar, a week or so later I did a search of Ebay and was super lucky to find a similar coin which met all of my criteria for an Ebay purchase:
- Poor seller pics which show some promise
- A seller who is obviously not a coin dealer but has a high feedback score
- A coin which has been straight graded by PCGS, preferably in an older holder
- Priced favorably so that even if I can't make any "improvements" then I can at least get my money back at auction or BST

My photo after a trip to CAC...I thought it had a shot at a Green...was super surprised to get a Gold:

Nice score!
Indeed.
Your 4 points show you’ve dialed in what it takes to make a score on eBay. Well done, nice coin.
Nice.
Nice work!!!

It probably was in a PCGS EF40 holder with a green bean before it was resubmitted.

Just curious. If you paid $3200, what do you see as the upside? About $800? @jonruns
I know I would value it closer to 5k

Most excellent!!
Awesome pick up!
I'm curious, though. With the grade of AU55 and obvious wear, how much higher of a grade CAC believes this could go to give it their gold sticker? Does the luster in hand push it to AU58?

Personally I would price it as a 58+

Territorial’s are extremely difficult to grade. They were crudely made and most were poorly struck. Doug Winter once said that only two people know how to grade territorial’s and neither work for a TPG. I have seen territorial’s graded 45 and to me they don’t look much different than a 61 or 62.
Wow... awesome!
Dang! What a great score!
Congratulations!

I'm all in on this coin at $3250 (Ebay price + tax + CAC)...the upside could be $1K to $2K...obviously not enough to retire on...doesn't even cover my monthly car payments LOL...but it's more than I've made on any coin sale in at least two years...just breaking even has been my goal!!
My original post was not to brag about the amount of the gain...but more to celebrate that there are still coins out there that are waiting to be found or re-discovered...
To me much of the thrill of collecting is in the hunt...and I've pretty much given up on the big auction as their lots are so well scouted by professionals that it seems almost impossible that something will fall thru the cracks...so that unfortunately of late my "hunt" has been relegated to how fast I can hit Send on an email to DWN or CRO about one of their NEWPs...
I guess local auctions are an option but I just don't have that kind of time in my life right now...and Ebay is not what it used to be...currently a lot of overpriced junk and fakes to wade through...
This modest find and the resulting sticker has re-invigorated my collecting interest for the short-term...to me that's the point...kind of like finding a 200 year old coin in your backyard with a metal detector...it's probably got environmental damage and is worth nothing but it's really cool!
Skier08: I like territorials because no one can accurately grade them...that puts guys like me with poor grading skills on a level playing field!!!
Asheland: As I posted in your thread last month, I think JA likes territorials with original toning like this one and your new one...if you haven't done so yet I would send it in...
Thanks to all for the interest and the nice thoughts!!! Enjoy the holiday!!
I agree much of the enjoyment is in the hunt. The true treasures are friends made
