Did this Barber half sell too cheaply?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,818 ✭✭✭✭✭

We discussed this Barber a few days ago on this forum. I believe it was misidentified with the auction describing it as a (business strike) AU. I think it is a Proof.
Here's the auction:

I was planing on bidding toward the end yet time slipped away and I forgot. Do you think it closed at a bargain to the new owner?

Maybe, but I'd imagine it's an awfully thin market to sell an impaired Barber half dollar proof. It appears to be lightly circulated and has some obvious hairlines, but what is under the haze may be far worse than what we can see. Overall, I guess there is upside, but it would depend upon how much money, work and time one would want to put into it in order to make it more liquid.

It did not sell too cheaply. The market for circulated proofs is very thin.

I'm not convinced it's genuine. The last PF50 to sell at Heritage fetched $350. As a details piece (if genuine), I would expect it to fetch much less and for around the range it went for.

Someone is going to fix it

Looks like old hairlines under the haze.....I agree with @TomB.....What we cannot see may be much worse... Cheers, RickO

Super strong details, but I think it's obvious, it's been dipped about 20 times.

    Completely stripped of any luster.

I also don't like the look of it and am inclined to think it is fake as I said in the other thread. It has that Chinese look to me...especially the color.

    It's not a fake.

    Nothing indicates that to me.

If it turns out to be a fake, then maybe I should think twice about remaining in this business.

The denticles, especially on the reverse, don't look right to me.
The mints denticles are all quite uniform. On the ebay coin they seem to change shape and size as you go around the coin. Like little dots at the top, to where they become taller lines toward the bottom. You know those wily Chinese have trouble with denticles.

Looking again at the item in question:

    1. If it is a fake is is well enough done to fool a very large percentage of collectors and probably dealers as well.
    2. Why isn't is slabbed?
    3. The surface almost has a sandblasted look to it. Very odd. I don't think the look was caused by overdipping.

I was show a complete BU set of Barber Halves several years ago that was fake and would really open your eyes as to how accomplished the counterfeiters have become unfortunately.

The color is just all wrong on that coin also...especially if it is an impaired proof.

what makes you think it could be a proof? When I first started collecting, I liked the white with no luster coins, someone told me what caused it but can't remember. Soaked/scrubbed in baking soda solution?

Not a coin I would want. Nice original AU Barber halves are going for very reasonable prices at this time. Whether a collector or investor I can’t see this coin as being sold too cheap. It’s lifeless
