Of course, it’s a contrived rarity

    The poll speaks for itself.

    No, it’s a bonafide rarity

Contrived or not, it is still a rarity....and the flipping furor and pricing supports that designation. Cheers, RickO

    I thought 100 was rare.

It's a widget whether it is a contrived rarity or just a regular rarity. 30,000 is not "rare". It is scarce relative to demand, but so is the 95-W widget, the S-VDB widget, the 1916-D dime widget, the 1955 doubled die widget, etc.

It’s a widget — not because it’s a “contrived rarity,” but because it’s easily replaced. These will be easily found online for the foreseeable future... just like the 1995-W, of which dozens can be found on ebay right this moment.

Flipping furor and pricing is not necessarily a good indicator of actual rarity. The gold Kennedy halves now sell for less than half the peak price during the flipping frenzy. When the dust settles on the ERPASEs, they'll be a key date, scarce, expensive, but readily available and not rare. People that are paying the highest premiums now will be left holding the bag.

I'm not sure we know what the final price point is. Your general analysis is correct: the frenzy will subside. But I'm not sure this isn't still a $1000 coin 5 years from now, even if it hits $1500 1st.
