What was the cheapest coin you knowingly had slabbbed?

lsicalsica Posts: 1,621 ✭✭✭✭

So... what was the cheapest coin you knowingly and purposely had stabbed? I dont mean ones you thought were more valuable than they turned out to be, I mean something you were fully aware of the value and paid to have slabbed anyway...

Philately will get you nowhere....

Probably a 1938-D Buff in a PCGS retro holder for my generations set - cost of the certification was probably 60% of the value of the coin.

Pretty sure I paid more for the grading than the coin on this one... but try to find another just like it... it's unique ;) Had to pay for that TrueView too of course :)

Oh, and yeah, it didn't straight grade... F Details :)

I have several Lincoln Cents that are in PCGS holders for consistency, storage and managing the inventory - that are non recognized varieties by PCGS that I still collected. This coin as just a circulated 1945 S is only worth a few cents. But its a top 100 CONECA RPM variety worth maybe $10 to those of us still trying to complete the TOP 100 RPM's.

You can see the whole showcase here:

47D walker toned and lustrous that I found in a junk roll. Came back AU 55
from an anacs freebie. I thought it might grade higher but that's looking a gift horse in the mouth. LOL

Someone gave me a proof set from my birth year so I sent them in to be slabbed. The coins are worth a little more than the cost to have them slabbed, but not by a lot.

I had some late model toned LWC slabbed that pcgs assigns no value to.
    Couple memorials too!

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

1944-D Lincoln graded AU-50 in a PCGS OGH.

It's an RPM, D/D North that is not attributed on the label.

Probably a 1918/7-D that graded G06. Cheaper coins just get flipped raw by me...too much waiting for my patience level.

If you consider a G06 1918/7-D to be a "cheap" coin, what is an expensive coin?

    No malice, just wondering.

I don't necessarily consider that coin to be cheap, just relatively cheap for what I'd consider worth slabbing. Coins worth a couple hundred bucks don't necessarily need to be slabbed to get the money out of them. At least not what I typically deal with.

AG03 1848 50c for my 100 year Birth Year set
    Paid $18.00 for it.

When it came back with my submission graded almost gem AG03 it sported a Walkers Shortbread Cookie crumb in the holder.

I sent it back for a 'blow off' and PCGS handled the shipping charges.

Some times, it's just not about the money.
An 1838 capped bust quarter in VF was my lowest.

I have no idea... in the early days, I am sure there were a few that should have remained in the album... But it was a novelty then.... Anyway, I really don't care...I still have them, whatever they are.... :D Cheers, RickO

1923 peace dollar I picked up at the junk silver store. Thought it would get into a MS65 holder and be worth the cost, but ended as super nice 64. Still a nice coin though!
