A fake compared to a genuine Large Cent (side by side comparison)

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,778 ✭✭✭✭✭

On a whim I ordered a fake large cent off of wish.com. It was free (just pay postage or around $3.00). It arrived today and I thought it would be interesting to compare it here (obviously the coin on the left) with my Dansco type coin (on the right).

The weight feels right, and it is made out of copper. I like the way it was "aged" to appear a bit more genuine.

Love the beaded border.. Several have been on the Internet as well.
    A similar 1808:

Some common reverse marks to your example on the reverse:

    And then an 1813 variant:

I could tell right away that it was fake because the planchet wasn't porous. Is it the photos or was the rim not upset before striking? The denticles look all wrong but the central devices could easily fool a novice collector.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Your 1808 has the same rim weakness at K1 on the obverse as the OP's coin, which I originally thought might be a rim clip but is obviously (based on multiple examples existing) a flaw in the dies.

Did you purchase yours as a fake, or was the seller portraying it as genuine?

I purchased mine on "wish.com". It's a Chinese website, kind of like Amazon and I did so knowing it was not genuine. I had purchased a couple of watches as gifts on that site and kind of "qualified" for this freebie (just had to pay postage).

I also purchased the following for $1. but it hasn't arrived yet:

Here's the verbiage for these two "coins":

    Welcome to my shop!
