Can anyone help me identify the year of this coin, or shed any light on this error?
I tried to provide a few pics to show the date. It doesn’t look like PMD to me.
Curious to see what others think.

Looks like it used to be 1972. Not sure if pmd or not.

It’s looks like PMD where the year took hits directly to look like that.

Agree. It's damaged. The lower half of the date took a hit. That pushed the metal into the strange configuration. It did not leave the mint looking like that
Damaged - damaged - after normal production - the whole coin has had a long and tumultuous life in circulation.
Most of the people on this forum have used such common coins daily for almost fifty years. How do you expect us to be impressed? Really.
Some coin counter/rollers can cause damage along the periphery of a coin.
This may have happened decades ago and subsequent circulation handling leaves you with a well travelled coin with all kinds of weird damage... post mint.
@Poseidon89 ....Welcome aboard....Definitely PMD.... Date detail obliterated/moved by contact with something.... Review the minting process and you will see it cannot happen at the Mint. Cheers, RickO
