Received this in the mail today. Looks like it has a wire rim on the reverse. No mintmark to be seen. What do you guys think? Any input is welcome.

I think the wire rim should be on the obverse in the 12-3 area. Seems we have been here before. @jwitten should be of more help.
Not one, sorry. I've had them with and without wire rims. I've had the wire rim on the right of the obverse and the top of the obverse.
I do see a wire rim. Where the blue line is.

That is the reverse though, not the obverse.
You have the coin, we have images that don't help. Go on the internet and look up the diagnostics for 11-D coins. There are several on both sides. Usually noted are small die polish marks at the beak and in front of the arrow tips.
No, as others have said, wire rim should be on the obverse, "scalloped" edge at top of reverse.

Both diagnostic features are from a collar clash if I'm not mistaken.

Interestingly this one doesn't show the obverse wire rim very well.

I appreciate your input.
Just a question how was this one graded a weak D?

It can be seen, but if you compare to the plate coin in the CF link it isn't nearly as distinct.

I don't know, maybe there is some D visible but not apparent in the pictures... @jwitten what's your opinion? I wouldn't have picked that one out as a weak D if it was raw.

Sadly I am convinced that is is not a 1911-D Weak D. I bought this on Ebay hoping it is a D because I don't have on yet in my $2.5 set. I paid a lot for this coin (considering the grade) because I was almost convinced it was a weak D. I allready have a 1911 in my set and don't know what to do with this one since I will loose money if I try to sell it agian.
Here are a few more pics with my digital microscope of the key areas to look for that i found online which this coin does not show..

It looks like a $295 low AU. "Hope" has lead to a lot of loss for many of us.
Yep. This is the first time I tried to cherry-pick a coin. And I did pay more than $295 for the coin

Honestly, these confuse me. I have cherry picked 3 1911-D Weak Ds as normal 1911. Two XF45s (still have) and an AU55. I clearly see the D's on my two XF45s, but there was literally no D visible on the AU55. I've had a 1911 with the scalloped edges on the reverse, and NGC, PCGS AND ICG returned it as a plain 1911. Blew my mind. @Insider2 personally took a look at it and said it was a plain 1911, and he said that confirmed his suspicions that the scallops on the reverse were not a giveaway 100%. Like I said, I've had them no wire rim, and wire rim on top and right. I've had scalloped edge ones, and no scalloped edge ones. I've never been able to see the die polish lines that some talk about. At one point I had a hoard of over 60 1911 42 1/2 Indians, because I was so scared I would sell a weak D and not know it! haha.
@jwitten so is there a possibility that my 1911 could be Designated as a weak D because of the reverse wire rim?

@jwitten that tube of quarter Eagles has to be one of the coolest things I’ve seen on here in a long time.

I've only seen them with wire rims on the front, not on the back, unfortunately.
NO. Not without the other diagnostics.
I am with the majority... does not look like a weak D to me. Cheers, RickO
