Most People Don’t Know These 10 Treasures Are Hiding In Massachusetts

Here's the first one, I'll post the other nine over the next couple of weeks. :)

  1. Buried Chests at Balance Rock, Pittsfield

According to legend, in the late 18th century a lawyer and a friend of his stole two chests containing about $200,000 in gold and silver pieces from a pirate and buried them near a strange boulder on Kents Island. The men supposedly marked the boulder by carving what appears to be the letter "A" on it which still is visible today. The story claims that the pair were planning on returning in five years to retrieve the treasure, but locals reported that they never returned. One chest was supposedly found in the 1930's, which leaves one still undiscovered.

:o Wow.... That would be fun to seek....Though I imagine the area has been searched with MD's and maybe even ground penetrating radar units....So, if still there...perhaps it was 'tunneled' under the rock a bit...Just an idea...Cheers, RickO

It is in a State Park located in a State Forest....so maybe detecting is somewhat limited, IDK :)

  • Very nice picture of the rock. Being able to see daylight between the bottom of the rock and the ground below it, what is holding the rock up?

a 165-ton boulder that appears to be precariously balanced on top of a slab of bedrock. This massive stone is 30 feet long, 15 feet wide, and looks as if the slightest breeze might knock it from its perch. However, appearances can be deceiving.
This bizarre boulder has actually been balancing since the last glacial era. As ice moved across the landscape, it picked up debris and "pebbles" such as this large stone. As the glaciers retreated, Balancing Rock was left in a precarious position, held in place by its own tremendous weight and a bit of luck.

Visitors to the rock will notice that it has been adorned with quite a bit of graffiti on one side. While you might think this is unsightly vandalism at first, a closer examination of the markings reveals that people have been commemorating their visit to this natural curiosity since the early 1800s. Between and beneath the spray paint, you can see graffiti from 19th-century visitors scratched into the stone.

Maybe the rock started to lean so they had to remove it. ;)
