Old monetary counterfeits are a particular interest of mine, a bit over a hundred years ago my 2nd great grandfather was convicted of minting the new Walking Liberty halves.

Very cool looking! I’m still collecting electrotypes and struck counterfeit
early copper. Haven’t branched out to half or dollars

This is my second seated half die struck contemporary counterfeit. I also gave an 1877.

  • I think with that red stuff it has to be brass.

Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.

I can neither confirm nor deny possession of such an object.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I have new information that might be of interest. I have both a seated liberty half and quarter that both might be contemporary counterfeits...

Half... (very similar to the image at the top of this conversation)...

Discovered this coin in a mixed box of loose foreign coins. It appears to be gold plated or perhaps brass/bronze. I believe it is either a fake or is a double strike with errors. Have several more photos.

    Errors:

Obverse shield showing through "LIBERTY" ribbon making liberty text unreadable
    Reverse
        Various letters are faint
Clear double strike in letters on the right hand side

    Quarter...

Great to learn more about contemporary counterfeits both for US coins and Great Britain, e.g. Half Penny.

Are these type coins of significant numismatic interest? Funny I thought someone just returned from their chemistry class and tried to gold plate something. :)

The half looks like a match to the OP's coin, and the quarter looks like a contemporary cast counterfeit as well. I also collect them but I do not consider myself an expert, perhaps others will chime in as well. Thanks for sharing.

I'll definitely have to keep my eyes open for any more such specimens in my collection, now that I know more about them. Would love to learn more.

I'm considering listing the half and quarter shown above for sale. Is there a good marketplace to list them? Ebay does not accept anything listed as "counterfeit", regardless of the historical or numismatic value.

Speaking of value, is there a price range I should consider for these two items? I've never sold contemporary counterfeits. Your guidance is most welcome!

Wait until the Bad Metal book is published on 50c and $1. It should make your coins more valuable. ICG slabs fakes and that may also make your coins easier to sell to a collector.

You could list them on the BST here, or if you use Facebook, there is a group created by the author of the Bad Metal series that id dedicated to selling. You could also list them on eBay if you do not use the word "counterfeit" in your listing, I have seen "contemporary bogus" used before to stay under the radar.
