Roger Burdette contributed this U.S. Mint correspondence to the Newman Numismatic Portal, at https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/archivedetail/512703?Year=1880&take=50.

On October 13, 1880, Mint Director Horatio C. Burchard writes to the Carson City Mint Superintendent James Crawford regarding a defective Morgan dollar reverse hub from 1878 that was used to sink dies for Carson City Mint silver dollars. Burchard notes 39 resulting defective dies, and blames the urgency to being striking Morgans as the culprit.
