I have a quasi-interest in Buffalo Nickels

WalkerfanWalkerfan Posts: 9,685 ✭✭✭✭✭

Was excited to pick this up at the show, yesterday. I added it to my one per date set that I may never finish but don't care.

It's not an expensive coin but I like it's strike and skin. I also like that it's an early date and a near gem.

14 is one of the mushiest of the early buffs. This is not one of those. Nice light patina, 63?

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

64 and the reverse fields are better than most i see.

Nice Strike! and a little die clash in there too. I like the color. 64

64 here. I like Buffs too. Trying not to get sucked into that rabbit hole. They are nice though.

I like it as a 64 if the luster’s there. If not a strong 63.
Nice score my coin brother 👌🏻

I read my OP and see that I have, inadvertently, given it away by calling it a 'near gem' LOL

    So, I will reveal:

    Yes, it's a 64. :D

I appreciate everyone's comments, so far, but it has been especially nice to hear from @clarkbar04 @FullHorn @crazyhounddog and @grip, b/c I KNOW that you guys definitely know your Buffs!! Glad you like!!

Please keep the opinions coming. I love to read them and learn from them ALL. :) Many thanks!

I think some more eye candy will help remove the “quasi” part.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Nice example, I'd agree with 64 based on the picture.
1914 is one I'm still looking for. I'm trying to find one with a good strike and without die clashing, a difficult combination.

That's GREAT!! Yes, I agree, after finishing my Walkers; I'll just be collecting at my leisure. A LOT more FUN!! ;)

Good luck with your endeavour! I'd call it a 64.

I, too have assembled a Mint State date set but to add little bit of a challenge I've made sure each date is as beautifully toned as I could. I started out with an attempt to get full strikes but found that to be impossible. A date set makes a nice collection without the extreme cost a full set would entail.

I've loved Buffaloes ever since Childhood when you could still find them in your change. Sadly they never had a date on them.

A couple years ago I snagged an ultimate prize - a Proof Buffalo ( PF 65) in Rattler ( green) with a Gold CAC sticker. The Coin is a beauty but the Holder looks equally as impressive , absolutely Mint. Will PCGS Slab the entire works ?

Anyway I've located another Proof Buffalo thats also a PF 65, Gold CAC, same Date, but it's a White Label Rattler.

How much does a White Label add to value over a Green Label? I probably should pass and just go after another Date.

But I'm just really curious, how much more is a White Label over a Green Label in a Rattler Holder?

I think if the cert # starts with 108 it would be like A LOT.

I think the $1500+ premium is a bit steep but maybe I'm out of touch.
Unless you are a slab collector, buy a PR67 for half that price.

Hey now That Is a beautiful Specimen. I want one of those. Much more impressive than another 1937 - in another color of Rattler HOLDER,

Yep, only the second year of the whole series. I found that to be an attractive buying point. The same dealer had a 1915 P in the same grade but I thought that the 1914 was nicer and it’s a slightly better date.

Good to see you looking at Buffalos. Before I collected Walkers, I was a Buffalo collector and was the first set I sold through HEritage. I like the look of your 1914 - some nice toning and a solid strike with not too many marks. Luster goes a long way on grading with Buffalos - I like 64.

@breakdown Thanks! I like MS 64, too. I buy 65s, when I can get them, but I won't go beyond that. I almost forgot that you did Buffalos, since I associate you, mostly, with Walkers and your epic set. Your icon always serves as a reminder. :) I know that you also did SLHs and I like them, too, although I'll never attempt a set of those. I would like just one SLH MS example, as a type coin, though. I used to buy them raw back in the day and I like the design and history a lot. Thanks for the feedback and glad you like it!

I strongly approve of collecting both walkers and buffs!

I only need one to finish the toned buff date set (1921) and reasonably priced toned walkers don’t show up all that often so it’s slow going.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.
