Name a coin in the population report that you'd like to see...

ianrussellianrussell Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was researching some coins today, and one was graded 30 years ago, and has never appeared in an auction, never in a Registry Set...no one has seen it since it was graded in the early days of PCGS. It was the finest graded back then, and nothing has graded met or exceeded the same grade since (it's still a lone pop 1).

What coins would you like to see photos of that are only shown as a number in the population report?

I'd like to see the 1901-S quarter in 58.

    That’d be nice.
But I’ll see you and raise you the one 1860-s seated quarter in 58.
Based on the PCGS images, the 61 looks rubby. It’d be nice to compare.

    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

The coin I’d most like to see is actually in NGC’s population report (hopefully I don’t get booed off of here). Their report lists a 1935 Connecticut Tercentenary Half Dollar with a VG grade. This is my favorite classic commemorative, and it would be really cool to see this coin in such a low grade. I wonder if it has a nice “circulation cameo” appearance?

I'm not interested in just seeing images, but in actually having an opportunity to buy it. This is primarily the PCGS Peru and Bolivia pillar minors (since I own most of the NGC date/denomination combinations already) but also other series I don't actively buy anymore or never did.

I'd like to have a shot at buying some of the Richard Stuart Guatemala coinage which I never saw at auction. PCGS has a partial date run of the Chile quarter real in upper circulated grades (XF). NGC has a low number of Mexico royals outside of the 8's.

I'd like to see the 1940 MS69 Jefferson Nickel. No image on CoinFacts. No auction records. I don't personally collect Jefferson Nickels, I just think it would be interesting to see what the coin looks like. It's not a date you would expect to come superbly nice or anything of that sort.

I think this is it, but no guarantee. Someone posted it as a p58 on a web site & I saved it.

Indeed, I have seen pics of the 1919 and others before but the opportunity to see them in hand would be a treat for any Lincoln collector. I also would love to see the finest graded MS66bn chain cent, love the history attached to that 1793 coin.

That 1805 half dime was exhibited at an ANA sale a bit ago, I saw it in either 2008 or 2003 in Baltimore. I think it was NGC 65 back then; clearly uncirculated, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear that it'd been dipped.

School Girl pattern dollar, the 1793 cent that was known as The Coin. Any Branch Mint
proof Morgan dollar, I guess they're labeled "Specimen" now. The list is endless.

There was or perhaps still is a photo on CoinFacts but I'd love to see it in hand

I can't today - but it is on my to-do list. Someone is still editing the footage. I'll follow up.

    This.

Based on the pop reports I have, the 40-P PCGS-69 was graded between Jan 2002 and Oct 2003. Been out there a long time. Also hard to imagine how a Jeff could grade MS69 without full steps. I have long suspected it to be an error, but I would be happy to be wrong.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

    vern, and KK,

I believe that's it, I have not seen in hand either, but had been shown a photo of it by somebody a few years ago (not the owner).
