Saddle Ridge is on fire

Does anyone remember the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" of gold coins?

On the news today:

The Saddleridge Fire, near Sylmar, had been listed at 1,600 acres as of 2 a.m. — but two hours later it was at 4,600 acres (6½ square miles), the Los Angeles Fire Department said. There was no containment.

It started in Sylmar last night at about 9:00 pm,
at the top of Saddle Ridge in that area. (no connection to the Saddle Ridge Hoard of gold coins at all)

We can smell the smoke here in our office, and the entire SF Valley is covered in a white smoke
cover - about 5 miles due North from us.

Good thing the coins were found in time!

Perhaps the heat from a wild fire long ago helped color the hoard.

The Saddleridge Fire has nothing to do with the Saddle Ridge Hoard. Fire is outside of LA and hoard was in Northern California.

San Luis Obispo is way north of of LA. - about 2.5 hours or so.

Since a saddle is just a dip in the ridgeline between two peaks. it would not suprise me if "Saddle Ridge" is a widely used name, not just at the site of the gold cache. I sure hope everyone is able to get out of the way of this fire safely.

    Wow
    That's a thought to ponder.

I hope this new fire doesn't claim casualties

While in Navy Boot Camp we had to crawl through the smoke house, I'm in Canoga/Chatsworth and it's just like that in the North/West San Fernando Valley

These damn fires are becoming the norm out here in California.
I sure hope no one gets hurt and no structures burn.

1 mile from my house. Left at 11p last night, back home tonight, but the air is still heavy!

Hope all my neighbors are safe!

    PS
The Saddle Ridge Hoard was from a different Saddle Ridge, 300-400 miles north of here.

Not to minimize the effect this has to people and property, but fire is and always has been a part of the natural ecology of the relatively dry Western landscape. Our previous fire suppression efforts have, in some cases, increased the level of available fuel to the point that fires spread much more quickly and over a larger area than they otherwise would have. As with many things it’s a complex issue with lots of opposing viewpoints.

Burn areas often become excellent wildlife habitat as they regrow.
